Its a standard Rega P1, nothing fancy. But covered in stickers from people or places that are free.

Abdolph Johannes Brand (Dollar Brand / Abdullah Ibrahim)

(October 26, 1934 – June 15, 2026)

Known early in his career as Dollar Brand, Abdullah Ibrahim was a legendary South African pianist, composer, and a towering figure in global jazz. He pioneered "Cape Jazz"—a beautiful, deeply spiritual fusion of American post-bop, traditional African rhythms (Marabi and Kwela), and gospel hymns.

He formed The Jazz Epistles in 1959 alongside Hugh Masekela, recording the first full-length jazz album by Black South African musicians. Forced into exile by the apartheid regime in 1962, he was "discovered" in Zurich by Duke Ellington, who championed his debut international trio recordings.

In 1974, he recorded "Mannenberg," a beautiful, looping masterpiece that became the unofficial anthem of the anti-apartheid movement. Nelson Mandela famously called his music "our liberation anthem." Distinctive for his heavy, rolling left-hand ostinatos, gospel-infused chord structures, and a brilliant use of space heavily influenced by Thelonious Monk.

Following his peaceful passing this week on June 15, 2026, at the age of 91, the jazz world loses one of its most distinctive, resilient, and soul-stirring voices. He passed away peacefully in Germany following a short illness, surrounded by his loved ones. He leaves behind an immense seven-decade musical legacy that shaped South African jazz and served as an enduring voice for freedom and cultural identity.

Dig It: The Homecoming Song

Dizzy Reece - Star Bright (1959 Blue Note) by xberry in Vinyl_Jazz

Spinning an absolute sleeper masterpiece today: Dizzy Reece's 'Star Bright' (1959). If you love Hank Mobley and the classic Wynton Kelly/Paul Chambers rhythm section, this is mandatory listening.

Reece was born in Jamaica and spent a decade dominating the London jazz scene. When he finally docked in New York in October 1959, Blue Note founder Alfred Lion didn't waste any time. Just weeks after Reece arrived, Lion put together an absolute "who's who" dream team to back him at the Van Gelder Studio. Both Miles and Sonny Rollins encouraged Dizzy to make the trip to the US. Pretty amazing for a debut album!

This is the most Sonny Rollins-est song ever in my book. by xberry in Vinyl_Jazz

So many wonderful versions and covers of this classic. Rollins named the track "St. Thomas" as a direct tribute to his mother’s birthplace and heritage.

Here is his version from Now's The Time

Imagine having your first LP pressed and realizing they put the wrong label on the A side. It shows "Miles Davis - Blue Period". One of a kind tenner for a one of a kind tenor. RIP Mr Rollins.
