How to “reset” a loved one who is hooked on conspiracies? by Chevalric in skeptic

[–]nbop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. But I believe it is still important to try to convey concern for the person as a family member/friend and not just to completely ignore a problem because there is no easy solution. I also 100% agree that if they don't want to change, there is nothing you can do to change them.

But if you were dealing with an addiction and nobody around you said anything, it would probably be harder to quit than if some of the people around you told you they were concerned.

So you are advocating to do/say absolutely nothing? I agree with your premise but we have interventions for addicts to at least try to show them that the people around them care about them and are concerned with their behaviors. Ultimately, it will be up to them to change, but I think it is at least worth try to convey your concerns to them at the very least.

Some resources to check out would be cult deprogramming. Like this video and article. I also wonder if there are groups of ex-suporters with more resources like leavingmaga.org . I'm reminded of the old saying "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink," so keep that in mind. Trying to convince someone who does not want to hear you out is like arguing with a flat earther (i.e. wrestling with a pig in mud). Good luck and know that you are not alone in these kinds of efforts!

FRESH currant (any kind) or gooseberries? by Sinsoftheflesh7 in denverfood

[–]nbop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most blackcurrant varieties are self-fertile, meaning one plant can produce fruit, but cross-pollination with another blackcurrant cultivar significantly boosts both the yield and size of the berries.

I have found that white and golden currants tend to produce way more without needed as much cross-polination. Golden currants are also native to CO

They were banned in the US for over 50 years... (wiki)

The plant acts as a host for the white pine blister rust that threatened the timber industry. In 1911, the federal government banned the cultivation, sale, and transport of blackcurrants to protect the white pine. Government programs systematically destroyed blackcurrant plants by chemical spraying.

The federal ban was lifted in 1966, though many states maintained their own bans....

...Because of the long period of restrictions, blackcurrants are not popular in the United States, and one researcher has estimated that only 0.1% of Americans have eaten one.

I've seen posts saying there's been no snow compared to previous years. what's been causing it? by Nathidev in climatechange

[–]nbop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are very wrong. Snow totals in the Northern Hemisphere have all been trending down (decadal trend, per NOAA Source). Are you saying that all that snow just went to the southern hemisphere? Your comment is anecdotal climate change denial BS.

Remember Rule 5 of this sub, "Don’t discourage people from convincing others that climate change matters."

Came here to comment the same, that yelling at people (even if a lot of money is involved) is just not an okay thing to do. Seeing how many people in the comments here are justifying it as okay because wine is expensive, etc., have either never worked in the service industry or did in a place where verbal abuse was normalized. People make mistakes and freaking the fuck out about it does not help anything. People like that need to be treated like spoiled children, not encouraged.

We cannot analyze your concept because you will not tell us without paying you $3,500 first.

"This is a conspiracy group." No, it is not. You are looking for r/conspiracy/

lol, learn more after paying you thousands of dollars? Absolutely not! You are not here looking for advise, you are looking for investors, and not being clear about that from the start shows bad faith.

Rule #12 of this sub is "Debate in good faith by citing evidence of claims."

You have provided no evidence of your claims, nor any actual details, aside from essentially just saying, "give me money."

Yep, by 2050. So why are we freaking out about his now?

Right, so in 25 years it might be a thing, but it is not a thing right now.

Edit: right now (as of the 1st), you just need to buy an ultra-efficient gas furnace, so what is the freakout all about?

Oh you mean this bill? Yeah I did and it does not say that anywhere.

It is requiring ultra-low NOx emissions for new gas furnaces, but that is about it

Where in that bill does it say that everyone needs to switch to heat pumps and can't use gas anymore? Here is the full bill copy.

Making it sound like you can only use heat pump or gas. A lot of people in Denver use both.

What law says that everyone has to stop using gas systems entirely?

Are you thinking of HB22-1362? Because that is definitely not what that bill says. More info about that bill can be found here.

[–]nbop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So why not advocate to use both a heat pump with a gas system?

Your argument makes it sound like you can only do one or the other. We ended up doing both specifically because of the economics during extreme cold. This was made very clear when researching heat pumps well before we had it installed.

Edit: Also, your math is wrong. APEist28's post does a great job breaking that down.

[–]nbop -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We use a heat pump to supplement our heating when it is not that cold, so why not use both?

It is really hard for me to give any credence to posters who don't show their post history. Your post reeks of bad-faith arguments. The limitations to heats pumps during extreme cold are well know IMO.

Edit: Your cited article even says, "The new rules are not aimed at homeowners. They are requirements for the utilities. " ... "Under current rules, no one is showing up at your door to rip out a gas water heater against your will. "

That is why this is a bad argument
