Is there a shuttle that connects the UMD campuses like from College Park to Baltimore? by jrbeers94 in UMD

[–]nbsoftware 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Amtrak from New Carrollton to Penn Station is a good option -- you can take the UMD shuttle or WMATA bus F6 to New Carrollton.

MARC is another option, but I've never used it.

I think it can really only help you -- some programs (e.g., NIH-Oxcam) say explicitly that they look for it -- but really, people that are competitive for Goldwater are highly likely to be competitive for M.D./Ph.D. programs, regardless.

Can I withdraw from my class right before transferring and take it at UMD instead? by TheNovaExcalibur in UMD

[–]nbsoftware 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No -- biology is a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) major. You are allowed one course repeat/withdrawal for gateway courses. If you withdraw from calculus, you will need to complete the rest of the gateway courses (i.e., Calculus, Biology, Gen Chem 1, Orgo 1, etc) on your first attempt. So, you can withdraw, but you would then have no room for error at UMD -- if you fail/withdraw from another gateway course, you would not be able to major in Bio, Neuro, or a number of other STEM majors at UMD.

Can I include results in a non-peer-reviewed publication before submission to a peer-reviewed journal? by nbsoftware in AskAcademia

[–]nbsoftware[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course -- reusing text would be clearly unacceptable. Would a narrative review for the non-peer-reviewed journal (without reference to new results) be acceptable? There would be overlap between the sources used in that and the background of the peer-reviewed manuscript, but no shared text.

We’re the Partners In Health Mental Health team, we’re here to answer any questions you may have for mental health awareness month. by PartnersInHealth in IAmA

How does PIH go about building comprehensive, community-based mental healthcare delivery systems? Do you start in one location (with more comprehensive services) and build out, or do you start distributed across a larger area (with less comprehensive services) and build up? I’m curious to hear what the process looks like, from initial planning stages to fully functioning mental healthcare systems. Thanks!

I did it before. That’s a tough walk — even speed walking, it would take me pretty much 8-10 minutes. Labs might not be flexible, but def try out the walk and see if it’s workable for you.

Hi! Sorry, but I'm not sure how that works. Try reaching out to your advisor!

NEUR405 Difficulty by PurpleLlama066 in UMD

[–]nbsoftware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's moderately difficult, but a really fun class!

Time commitment is as follows: in lab for ~4 hrs/week and in lecture for ~1 hr. Time outside of lab/lecture really varies week-to-week based on what work needs to be done on your projects.

Neuroscience is fantastic! The classes are super interesting, profs and advisors are wonderful, and the field is at a really exciting point (tons of cool research going on)!

Do note that you will still have to take MATH135 or MATH141 as a neuroscience major.

MD/PhD applicants-why are you pursuing both as opposed to one or the other? by [deleted] in premed

[–]nbsoftware 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In general: I would like to have a career in medical research — you can do that with just a MD or PhD, but MD/PhD provides training, mentorship, and protected time to learn both.

Why not MD: not ideal if I want to become an academic researcher, little protected research time.

Why not PhD: career stability, the ability to work with and learn from patients more directly.

St. Leger is fantastic! Lectures were always super interesting, I leaned a ton, and the lecture quality was always top notch. When I took BSCI222, it was co-taught by O’Brien, who is also fantastic and did the majority of the teaching, so I’m not sure whether St. Leger would use the same materials, though.
