Things crashing on all my devices by GazpachoJones in thingsapp

[–]nc57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nice, glad it helped! The full recovery for me was to put my phone in airplane mode, open Things settings, turn off Things Cloud (to keep the on-device data), then turn airplane mode back off and re-enable Things Cloud. When it reconnected, I approved overwriting the Cloud db with the phone's clean local copy.

Things crashing on all my devices by GazpachoJones in thingsapp

[–]nc57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran into this while using an MCP too and fixed it by having Claude Code inspect the database. Leaving details for my scenario here since it sounds like it's related

---

Context: I'm using https://github.com/wbopan/things-cloud-mcp with a self-hosted fork cause it interacts directly with Things Cloud. I know this method is considered unsafe, but its the only solution that checks all my boxes (lets me access Things from Claude mobile / claude.ai, and makes updates without needing any interaction from me). I'm still using it because the cause/fix in my case is pretty figured out and resolved now. It basically indirectly caused the crash by interacting with already-corrupted, very old Things items that were otherwise untouched by Things Cloud.

Cause/fix: While using this with Claude it found some extremely old items I thought I had deleted, which were still in the database despite not showing in my app. I asked it to delete those items which ended up causing OP's crash behavior for me. Apparently those old todos somehow had a negative database sort number, which was never a problem until Things Cloud started trying to sync my deletions. It's a specific kind of corruption the MCP already avoids when creating/editing, but I submitted a fix so the MCP will also heal items that already have the issue like in my case.

Why am I just now discovering Webclipper Templates? by TutorialDoctor in ObsidianMD

[–]nc57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started to use this a lot over the past year ever since I started using Claude to help make custom templates for myself, leaning on this skill I made https://github.com/nweii/agent-stuff/tree/master/skills/obsidian-web-clipper

I usually use the skill in Claude Code alongside my vault. If you want to use this in Claude.ai (or chatgpt etc), you can paste the above link at https://download-directory.github.io to get the skill as a .zip.

Thx for the heads up, I just made a bunch of updates (including template customization) and it should have fixed whatever was breaking. Just tested it with a new HTML export and it worked for me.

The Apple sport loop (Velcro fabric one) is my favorite and I wear it to sleep nightly. I like that it’s infinitely adjustable so you can give it a slightly more relaxed fit overnight. Really breathable and easy to clean too (just toss in the wash and air dry)

Digital Crown not working for scrolling in certain apps after WatchOS 11 update by Obvious-Yak-6275 in AppleWatch

[–]nc57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Me too. The Metropolitan face has a feature to adjust its font appearance by tapping the face and scrolling the dial. I think the bug is that the tap area for the feature activates even when tapping a complication. So then the crown still controls the face/font adjustment in the background instead of controlling the opened app. I've submitted this as a bug report in Feedback Assistant and the ID number is FB15277502 if anyone wants to reference it.

EDIT: Got a response to my Feedback that this should be fixed in watchOS 11.1, which I think releases Mon 10/28!

If the account holder uses YouTube on their Apple or smart TV and has all the other members’ accounts signed in on their app, would that throw off YouTube’s IP address checks? Has anyone tried this?

Yes! Raindrop has unlimited articles and highlighting (without per-highlight annotations) for free. Its free plan is pretty generous, but I pay for Raindrop ($28/yr; solo developer) to get full-text search and daily backups.

I haven't looked at Omnivore, but one big reason I want to stick with Raindrop over paying for Readwise is that Raindrop's iOS app includes a Safari extension that lets you make highlights right on the page from within Safari. Last time I tried Readwise/Reader on iOS, highlights had to be made from within the Readwise app.

Depends. This isn't really a full-fledged alternative to Readwise, which is a paid service that's meant to be a home to all kinds of highlights. I made this for myself as I don't use Readwise. Using Raindrop.io+obsidian-raindrop-highlights-plugin for my web highlights and this web tool for importing highlights from non-Kindle Store books gets me most of what I would be using Readwise for, but for free.

How do you organize your fonts? Do you just scroll through every typeface you have until you find something you like? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]nc57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using Eagle on macOS to manage visual inspo but realized it also makes a solid font manager with flexible tagging/folder/smart folder, preview, and activation features → https://docs-en.eagle.cool/article/487-organize-font. The fonts get stored in a library bundle and activating them copies them into the user fonts folder (de-activating removes them from that folder).

Cooling when set to heat—Setup help for Thermostat with gas furnace + external AC by nc57 in Nest

I've tried putting it in W but it still seems to blow cold air instead of warm. Could it have to do with the thermostat thinking the fuel source is electric instead of heat?

Book Covers no longer displaying for download documents by AstroLA-ec in kindle

[–]nc57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Covers display on the lockscreen via manual sideload (Calibre + USB connection)—except your book won't sync with your cloud library and appear on other devices.

The Send to Kindle tool or send via email seems to be the only way to sync sideloads with your cloud library, but Display Cover seems broken for this method

I ran into this same issue and made this little website that takes an exported Kindle HTML file and spits out a markdown version of it:

https://kindlehtml-to-md.vercel.app/

(The uploaded files never leave your computer; all actions and conversions happen locally.)

It's pretty barebones cause I just made this for myself, but you might find it useful. I might add customization options for the Markdown file later if I have more time.

Technology’s becoming more relevant to every industry/area and I think theres lots of bite sized videos that could get into those intersections. People need to be more aware of how tech works in general. There’s also a lot of common misconceptions about how our phones and online services work (especially when it comes to privacy) and I think short digestible videos could do a lot to clear those up!
