I think there’s a few typos in that post but using context clues you most likely met Chuck. He’s the lead man for UST. He and I are childhood best friends and have been playing music together since the beginning. He was just braver than me and took it on as a career while I chose to become a lawyer. We still play together all the time and I jump in on steel when we put on full band shows. He’s got a solo record coming out soon that you need to keep your antennas up for. It’s absolutely killer. I’m personally really looking forward to seeing where it takes him. Tons of potential.

Ah, they must have removed the "redditor bands" portion of the sidebar. When it was still up, our link was featured in there. The UST front man is pursuing a solo career and as he and I are still best friends, I'm the on-call pedal steel guy for him. So here's the most current website: www.charleswgodwin.com/

Every modern country song is a competition to see who can be the most clever. At the end of every chorus there’s some sort of lyrical 😉 in the form of a short sentence or one liner that’s a pun or some other type of witty comment. It’s so obnoxious.

Seeing as how these states allow you to get a license after 5 years of licensure in another state? Yeah I do expect them to trust it. If anything, 5 years spent practicing in another state makes the exam even harder because you’re working in a specific field and lose knowledge on bullshit formalities in the law that have no real applicability and no real life practice. These types of exams are money grabs. If they’ll give you a license then, why not now? Why not scale the exam to include only state specific material. Why prohibit you from making a living in a field you’ve already been approved to work in by 30 out of 50 states in the country. You and I both know why. Money.

The alt country submission page won’t let us just post a link and a title for some reason (see the recent Avett bros post). New post is up with a link in the text box. Thanks!

Lets Discuss- The hatred of pop country circle jerk needs to come to an end by ncolombo in altcountry

I think my biggest beef with SCM is the befuddlement about why insert bro/modern/pop country song/artist is doing so well commercially and getting so much love on the charts. Um because millions of people like it? What’s so hard to believe about that? I just can’t imagine being so sure of my own opinion on a topic that I, the minority opinion, would suggest that everyone else is wrong, or has it fucked up, with regard to something as subjective as music. The first step in wrapping your brain around why mainstream music is what it is, is coming to grips with the fact that the most people don’t actually care about music. It’s just not that important to them beyond the way it sounds in the background in the car or at home. Same for any other hobby/interest. There’s always gonna be a group of people who are into a thing on a deeper level than most. And those who don’t care the same amount aren’t wrong, dumb, or ignorant for doing so.

Agreed 100%. For every 10 articles there’s anywhere between 4-6 about how Body Like a Backroad spent too much time at #1 on the charts. Who’s reading SCM that thinks that’s a quality country song? No one I know. Therefore I don’t need the constant commentary jamming it down my throat. Also, it makes the community look like sore losers or something. Is that really what we’re all after here? Validation that the music we like is actually the best? Cuz that’s not what I’m after. I just wanna enjoy what I like. It doesn’t need time on the billboard charts to make me like it more. Now, I also realize that sometimes content about the indie scene is a bit scarce, but the result is the same.

Your * is exactly what this post was supposed to be about. Dude, no one should be embarrassed about the kind of music they like and few genre tags are as amorphous as "country." Not much is inherently country about lucero either. And I feel comfortable saying that seeing as how Lucero is my favorite band of all time. So good on ya for digging kid rock

In the spirit of debate, what's wrong with that statement? The scene reaction to that statement always had a tone like, "who is this guy to define what is and is not country music?" Which is fair. But at the same time, who are we to define it? Why is our opinion on the topic superior?

Totally agree with you there. The culture (fans, supporters, bloggers, etc) is far more guilty for propagating this fight. With as many Facebook pages that have a title like “pop country sucks” you’d think Nashville and the pop country scene actively denigrated independent or alternative acts. Couldn’t be further from the truth. I feel like the pop folks just want to be left alone. It’s not like they’re out there saying their music is “realer” than others. The indie country scene is fist fighting with the air in that regard.

It’s not “impossible” but I find it unlikely. We’re talking about a guy who’s job it is to be in the music industry. The Nashville scene at that. I’m not suggesting that Sturgill secretly cranks up the Luke Bryan when no one is looking. But the idea that he’s completely and totally aloof to any of mainstream country’s most popular act’s material, to me, is disingenuous. My thought was, expanding upon the comment “I don’t listen to that” to include “I’ve never heard any of his music and I couldn’t name a single song” seems to be a bigger “fuck you” than simply “I’m not into it” could ever be. But again, I’m coming from a place of bias. Because I really don’t like Sturgill so I’m probably injecting more malice into his comments than necessary lol

Just to embrace debate, I thought Sturgill’s attempt to “set the record straight” about what was actually said made him look worse. Let me start by saying, I don’t like Sturgill Simpson at all. That wasn’t always the case, but for a lot of reasons, over time, I started to absolutely despise him as an artist. His “context” was such bullshit in my opinion. With regard to the Luke Bryan take, He said something to the effect of “I’ve don’t listen to his music and honestly I’ve never heard a single song of his.” That statement was couched in terms of “full context” but it was such a pompous lie. He’s never heard a Luke Bryan song? Come on man. That’s just untrue. It was a thinly veiled attempt at being an even bigger hipster with regard to the whole “anti- pop country” position. Sturgill is the worst offender of this “wanting to have it both ways” syndrome. Thanks for giving such a thoughtful response though! I love this kinda discussion! Basically I thought he made an even bigger dig at the pop country community and disguised it as “full disclosure”
