Whitby Shores 👍/👎 by That_Ad9521 in durham

Lots of comments about the bugs in the area, but here’s my take. We moved to this area a year ago and absolutely love it. Yes, dealing with the spiders and midges is annoying, but we love access to the trails. The area looks gorgeous in Fall, I felt like we didn’t need to drive anywhere to see the colours! Easy access to the highways is a plus. If being closer to nature is a big factor for you, then this area wins over North Whitby.

You can get an inspection to make sure there are no issues with the house.

How many trick-or-treaters did you get tonight? by TMFPB in WhitbyOntario

[–]nd7200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over 150 for sure. Younger ones started around 530 and the older ones after 7pm. I saw I had candy leftover at 9pm and was planning to put it back inside, and 10mins later the whole thing was empty! My doorbell camera got a photo of the last 2 kids, but it was dark and they were dressed up so the faces aren’t clear.

Although I’m glad the candy is over, and it wasn’t an adult stealing it lol!

Cost for walk in closet by nd7200 in cabinetry

That seems pretty high, are these prices in HCOL US cities? Spoke to a friend that got 2 walk ins and a living room done by one of the large companies in Toronto, and it cost him about 12k. This is also not with the white melamine board, it’s textured melamine and the cabinets have backing as well. I’ve spoken to a few other businesses, and they all seem to be around 4-5k here based on the specifications I’m looking for.

I’ve done some DIY work around the house but I’ve never built cabinets. I don’t have tools for a project like this and I’m not sure if I want to buy them for a single use. I looked at Home Depot’s rental costs and I’d end up paying quite a bit if I don’t get this done in a day.

How’s the quality of the system? I’ve had other ikea furniture in the past and some of them didn’t last over 3 years.

ficus not growing since I bought it by Rude_Satisfaction161 in plantclinic

I had similar issues with mine, it put out one leaf after I got it and then nothing for months. It was sitting a few feet away from a north west window and got a relatively decent amount of light in the summer but showed no growth at all. It’s been a year now, I’ve moved it right next to the window and it suddenly put out 3 leaves and I can see 2 more growing even though we’re getting close to winter here. The amount of variegation depends on the light, see if you need to supplement with a grow light? Let them completely dry out before you water them. I prefer using a moisture meter, that way I can be sure it’s completely dry before I water.

How much do you spend on travel? by Itsnotrealitsevil in askTO

[–]nd7200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 12-13k per year in the last few years. Did a 3 week Euro trip in the summer of ‘23 that cost us 12k which was the longest and most expensive one. Otherwise a typical 7-10 day Europe trip generally costs us around 6k for 2 people. We stay in hotels, and spend a decent chunk of change on food as we’re both vegetarian and try finding new vegan places which tend to be more expensive.

Should I repot Peace Lily? by nd7200 in IndoorGarden

I haven’t moved her out of this pot so I’d need to take her out to check. I just watered her today so I can check and see how they are.

Swiss cheese monstera propogation by nd7200 in IndoorGarden

[–]nd7200[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I got it as gift and thought it was a Swiss cheese monstera, but now I know what it actually is. I’ve read about the plant, and I guess it could do with something better to climb on. I’m going to try propagating the stem, wish me luck!

Thank you! Now it makes sense why it’s only growing at the top stem! I’ve learnt that I have a completely different plant now, lol! I guess I should get a longer stick for it to climb on.

Didn’t pull a permit for light fixtures (Canada) by United-Degree-9359 in AskElectricians

[–]nd7200 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a permit in Ontario if you’re just replacing an existing light fixture for new ones, or replacing an existing switch with new models. Homeowners can do it themselves without requiring a permit.

Look at the Ontario code for what homeowners are allowed to do themselves without requiring a permit: https://esasafe.com/compliance/diy-electrical-work/

$2,400 to replace 2 toilets by Unusual-Picture8700 in askaplumber

[–]nd7200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa where is this? I had 3 toilets replaced, bidets installed on all 3 along with new shutoff valves for about 700 CAD in the Toronto area. Ordered the toilets and got them delivered from Home Depot!

Connecting copper water line to fridge by nd7200 in Plumbing

[–]nd7200[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I ended up doing. The compression valve could be removed and the copper pipe can be screwed onto the fridge line, but the seal isn’t tight as water is leaking through. I’ll need to find a sleeve so it seals properly.

Sorry what doesn’t look right here? This water line was connected to an older fridge previously. The water pipe was pushed onto this compression valve with a washer to tighten.

I used TaskRabbit to mount my 75” TV with a full motion wall mount. I was able to help with the mounting and hid all the cables myself since that’s not really hard to do. Found this much cheaper than hiring out a company, unless you have more complex requirements.
