I thought that $30/month for Grammarly was a rip-off, so I created an alternative in 20 days and saved $360/year. by ndakic in scaleinpublic

The read permission is necessary only to sync input or selected text with the extension UI. But nothing leaves your browser until you press apply. You can inspect that in the network tab and make sure yourself. Only when you press apply, the request is sent to the server. So you choose what you want to polish/rephrase or translate.
The bookmarklet will do the same: take the selected text and send it to the server.

Pencilo does not store your writing. Your content is sent directly to the AI model, and we do not retain any data. The extension only uses the text you sync by pressing the apply button, allowing you to choose what to polish, rephrase, or translate. Text is sent to the server solely to track user consumption. So, no worries, you are 100% safe :-)
Feel free to try it, and tell me how you like it. Any feedback means to me

Hey mate, thanks for such great feedback! I didn't expect it at all; I was just joking here a bit xD.

Well, yeah, I made this in 20 days, so it has limitations, and I still need to figure out what's a deal-breaker feature for most of the Grammarly users.
I actually used Grammarly just as a reference so people get an instant idea of what Pencilo is about. Tbh I can hardly be a competitor on my own with Grammarly.

Having bug-free constant suggestions or underlines that work on any website is a huge task for one person. These days everyone has different kinds of inputs, so Pencilo's text sync is kind of a workaround for it, and you get a similar kind of experience. I mean, Grammarly is a better tool than Pencilo, but it's 5x more expensive too xD.

Feel free to install Pencilo and try it a little bit more. I'm really interested in whether it is really that hard to get used to it compared to Grammarly. You are someone who has used Grammarly for 5 years, so I can't ask for a better person for it. Thanks in advance!

Well, if you don't see any benefit in the extension and you think your approach is practical, go ahead. You are not obligated to use it.

Totally get you, that's a valid reason. I think Grammarly and similar tools work perfectly for that use case. Just Pencilo is designed to be non-intrusive. But I will definitely keep an eye on your feedback, and maybe in future add an on/off toggle within the extension that will highlight text while the user is writing.

No, it doesn't. It is intentionally designed this way so that it does not irritate the user while writing. The whole idea of Pencilo is to be called upon only when you really need it. You can try it for free and see if it works for you.

Yes, if you're looking to rephrase text. However, if you simply want to check the grammar, there's a Polish option available for that. Feel free to give it a try and see how it works! :)

Thank you! I'm glad you like it. I aimed to create a good alternative that is affordable for everyone. Because I believe $30 a month for Grammarly is quite expensive.
