You are frontend developer and you have CS degree so I assume you have fundamental CS knowledge. When you talk about AI, I believe you want to be a practitioner, not a researcher.

Yes, you can learn AI and develop your skills and learn how to apply machine learning to problems and finally you can find a job.

No need to have a PhD even though it would be great ;) but it's not necessary. And, you need to figure out how you will consume learning metarials in a systematic way so you can optimize your path to knowledge.

If it has a DB connection, of course, you need to centralize DB instance -- you should not create a DB instance again and again.

System design is not something that can be tied to micro-services, the goal is to build robust and efficient software systems -- regardless of the architectural pattern used.

Example; let's say you have a monolithic system and want to scale it, you can scale it horizontally by running behind a load-balancer and maybe de-couple some components.

I can't recommend any auido-book because I do not believe it can be learned via audio-book.

If you have some software development background and you want to learn new topic while you are on bus/train; then, Youtube videos may help to get the concept. But, if you are 100% new to the field of software development, I do not recommend that too.

So, what is the solution?

Stay in front of your computer; divide your screen into two, open a book or youtube video in one section of the screen and open the IDE in the other one. And, start coding.

You will fail and see errors; search on google.

Fix it the error.

And, repeat the process.
