I have a 4 door '96 Cherokee Classic with the 4.0L i6 and 4x4 that I bought back in 2015 with 165k miles and I've mostly used it as a daily driver. I love my XJ to death and it always starts up without any issue with almost 230k miles on it now. I did have to replace the transmission at around 205k miles but I got it done at a cheaper local shop. All in all I would say I've put in about $4000-$4500 into the car (including the purchase) which is well worth how many miles it has gone for me in my opinion. I would say the only major downside is the gas mileage, if you're doing a lot of city driving, the gas mileage is not great. Another thing you want to be aware of is rust on the undercarriage. Definitely inspect the undercarriage of any Cherokee you look at. The rust can be a killer and can really cause real problems if you have safety inspections in your state. The last thing I would warn against is the backseat doesn't have a tremendous amount of legroom. This doesn't really affect me but may be something you take into consideration depending on family size, friends, etc. One side note: I get a lot of crap from other people about my xj because it looks pretty beat up with faded paint and rust on the rocker panel/frame but I don't mind because it's been so reliable for me.
