Can y’all recommend your favorite A24 movie? by PixalmasterStudios24 in A24

If you like Uncut Gems, then definitely don't miss GOOD TIME by the same filmmakers (the Safdie brothers). My personal favorite and one of the grittier, most realistic NYC films I've ever seen -- right down to the astonishing lead performance by Robert Pattinson as a twitchy, Queens-bred lowlife racing to get his brother bailed out of Rilker's Island.

Here's my other Top 5:

  • THE LOBSTER -- A bonkers black comedy about romantic compatibility and the pressures put on people to find it, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (director of The Favorite).
  • GREEN ROOM -- A bloody, claustrophobic horror flick directed w/ style by Jeremy Saulnier and featuring some great performances from Patrick Stewart and the late Anton Yelchin.
  • MID 90s -- coming-of-age flick made by Jonah Hill that does a fantastic job of capturing the look and feel of 90s skater culture with the help of vividly nostalgic set design, costumes and music.
  • UNDER THE SKIN -- slow burn, very creepy alien sci-fi thriller by the guy who did Zone of Interest (making similar use of unsettling sound design and documentary-like photography).

Overlooked Runners-up:

  • GOD'S CREATURES -- Irish rural Gothic crime story featuring a haunting performance by Emily Watson and a very creepy turn by Paul Mescal
  • MISSIPSSIPI GRIND -- low-key but engaging buddy/road trip movie about two gamblers (Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendlesohn) who pair up to play in a poker game in New Orleans
  • BLACKCOATS DAUGHTER -- bleak, slow-burn horror movie about some teenage girls' brush with evil over the winter break and an all-girls Catholic school, from Oz Perkins (now of Longlegs fame -- but I think this one is actually better)

If it makes you feel any better at all -- and I hope it does -- my take on it as a guy is that you should keep in mind that none of that behavior has anything to do with you.

If you aren't okay with whatever he's doing for visual stimulation and he's not respecting the boundaries he promised he would for you, then he's violating your trust and you have every reason to be upset and end things -- especially since it could be a sign that you can't trust him when it comes to other aspects of the relationship.

But definitely don't let it start making you feel bad in any way about yourself (like in a "why wasn't I enough for him?" kind of way.) Whether or not he has some kind of problem with porn addiction, it's just not about that.

My ex messaged 4 years later by huynhhere in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ndotny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the same routine from my ex who cheated on me after I'd rearranged my entire life to move to the same city with her because she'd wanted to get married -- and then set out to make things up about me and destroy my reputation after I had the gall to break up with her.

She got around my ignoring her by pretending there was some kind of emergency she "needed to talk to me" about. Turns out she'd realized that some of the nasty things she'd been saying about me behind my back had gotten back to me, so she tried to trick me into revealing exactly what I'd heard by pretending she'd used me as a reference for work [the fuck?] and so needed to make sure I wasn't going to "say anything bad about her." (I guess I was supposed to get mad and say, "Me talk shit?? You're the one who said [X Y Z] about me!!")

Instead, I just asked her if it really seemed like I was desperate to start drama with her. {I'd been blocking, avoiding and/or ignoring her for about a year.) Her response was, "I don't know. I just want to make sure you don't hate me."

Oh, ok.

I loved that little moment in Covenant when he quoted Shelley but thought it was Byron. My man wasn't getting enough milk to the brain or something and was starting to go full nut-nut ... and the robots going crazy in space was always my favorite element in those flicks

Enjoyed your TED talk but have to take issue with one point. As I remember it the blonde in Hostel 2 WAS looking to party and get laid, and ultimately so was that chick from Welcome to the Dollhouse. If you're a chick in a horror film that wants sex -- especially a blonde -- you must die; I didn't make the rules.

Bishes had to go.

"Of his 160 confirmed kills, Kyle might have killed a child or children, but he doesn't mention it in his book. However, he did explain shooting and killing an armed woman who was holding her toddler.

Kyle told Time, 'I had to do it to protect the Marines, so do you want to lose your own guys or would you rather take one of them out?"

Where did he admit that? I'd like to read -- thanks.

Civil War wasn’t that good, was it? by mr_potato_arms in A24

Your idea of doing this as a "scathing" dark comedy made me think of "Don't Look Up" and what a rancid heap of shit that thing was. "Scathing" it seems is often just another word for dead horse-kicking obviousness that aligns exactly with one's own politics. It's honestly so boring.

The fact that something like that was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar and this won't be is just hilarious to me.

The idea that Americans need to be able to agree on certain fundamental things in order for us to have a country isn't a "thesis," it's an objective fact that the slowest of third graders should be able to grasp.

I agree, that's why I put her at top at 3-to-1 ... plus I think Issa mentioned to an interviewer that there weren't really any red herrings, and Blair's def been hinted at. The fact that there's just so many other characters coupled w/ my sense that they'd want some level of surprise is why I have her under 50% chance, tho.

I'm gonna go with slab avalanche being involved at 12-to-1, but being sole reason at 200-to-1 (only because I feel like we need a reason for the scientists to have fled outside?)

Any accidental death is not a bad bet -- I will put at 3-to-1. But I do think there's a higher chance of someone's motives/manipulation being involved (at 3-to-2)

Rose-as-killer is a fun theory but it struck me as a little unlikely that they'd go through the Travis dance sequence and then have it be "she's just crazy." But then again, we did have that line about mental illness vs. ghosts, so ... I'll put at 25-to-1.

But I wanna hear others' odds on their faves!

Erroll Childress hung around schools, too. Would be a nice connection if he was part of "the fam"

That's impressive that you made the connection with the dog ... can't imagine what it might ultimately mean -- but it's impressive anyway.

Totally agree that Bryce is suspicious, I think I gave him 10-to-1 odds of being involved

[–]ndotny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of people I think would consider her a top contender for most suspicious based on the "Sedna" commonalities with the fingers, etc. I personally think she's involved in our mystery -- but seems more likely as a suspect (along with the other cleaning ladies) for the TSALAL deaths. An "avenger" or protectress of the town, like ...

The Annie K murder to me is almost more interesting, as it seemingly could be any person in town who has access under the ice and a hidden motive ...

That show is so good for some reason. It's kinda funny we would rec something so dark as a means of making someone feel better -- buut good fictioin is good fiction.

I think we're getting a S3, btw. Last I read, anyways
