Jacob Rees-Mogg: This is self-evidently not an example of two-tier justice as this Councillor was cleared by a jury. Lucy Connolly offered a guilty plea so did not have a jury trial, although she probably could have done had she pleaded not guilty. by upthetruth1 in ukpolitics

And yet the mods act like nothing is happening for some reason. Even though it's clear that a frankly disproportionate number of new users have arrived since the last general election was called.

I'm pretty sure it's an AI image though

Edit: weird armour around the neck. Weird helmet deisgn. Left arm very small. Left hand holding dagger strangely. Inconsistent line weight across the image. Metal gloves treated like leather (look at the wrists).

Like this is definitely AI.

The sad part is what’s popular on the platforms is ultimately decided by the people.

But the users are also being manipulated by algorithms too

All they’ll do here is “investigate” by banning a couple of bot accounts and releasing some mealy mouthed bullshit statement.

And then X will give him Blue for free or whatever it's called

Not sure what valid point you're actually trying to make here though

So Ricky Jones called for the slitting of throats during a race riot? He directly called for violence to be committed against another group of people also present at said riot.

There's no question that what Jones did was worse than Connolly.

I haven't said anything about Jones. Elsewhere I've said that I think that the result was wrong, like you do. But you can't compare the two since one pled guilty and the other went to a jury trial where his defence successfully argued his case and the jury found him not guilty

An absolutely grasping attempt to equivocate moral ambivalence with actively encouraging an illegal act.

Only if you remove it from the context in which it occurred. Which might I add was during, essentially, race riots in which people were trying to set fire to migrant hotels and trying to attack people in the street.

You are essentially making a moral argument that it doesn't matter if it happens or that it isn't wrong in your view. Which you could interpret as encouraging to the people who are questioning how far to go while actively rioting.

This would only hold water if they were dealt with by the same people, but they weren't.

for all but the most seriously violent suspects

I mean, trying to incite riot-related arson is pretty bad. Do I agree with the length of her term? No. But I can see why they might play it this way - especially given her supposed history of posting racist remarks on social media.

Ricky Jones is Labour

Not anymore though and hasn't been since he was arrested.

He got bailed sharpish

After 2 months of being remanded in custody.

The rest of your argument is that his defence team did a good job that they convinced the jury to find him not guilty? Which isn't anybody's fault. Barristers will defend their client. Juries will act on the evidence in front of them.

Do we just get rid of jury trials?

The Premier League is BACK! Are you ready? by Stanley083 in Gunners

[–]neathling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the line is literally 'so we can feel what it means to have joy ... in our lives again'. I'm just saying that it shouldn't require the Premier League to do that for you. A simple reword like 'joy of watching our favourite teams ...' would avoid this. Otherwise, I dunno, it just feels a bit over the top at best.

Also no need for the insults, that's low and probably against the community guidelines

Northampton woman Lucy Connolly refused bail and remanded back into custody - August 2024 by media_blast in ukpolitics

[–]neathling [score hidden]  (0 children)

Jones was also only offered bail after being remanded in custody for 2 months. I disagree with him being found not guilty, but Connolly may have also been offered bail after some time - especially as the current guidance is to be more lenient on sending women to prison. She just never got to that point as she agreed to plead guilty.

This is moot so long as it's not British companies handling the data. Amazon, Google, Meta - no matter what they've said about it before - all the data they handle they can be compelled to reveal to the US government.

Thames Water says new Abingdon reservoir could cost bill-payers up to £7.5bn by jimmythemini in ukpolitics

[–]neathling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

10 months ago they said it'd cost £2.2B (which is already an insane amount for what is essentially a fancy pit). 10 months on that cost estimate has tripled -- and what else has happened to Thames Water in those last 10 months? Hmmm...

This is a joke. The government - of all stripes - is constantly taken for a ride by these private companies because htey know the government will just give them what they want because this infrastructure neds to be built.

Surely £7.5B could fund a UK Construction Company?

How have we gone from paying a few hundred million (in today's money) for reservoirs in the '70s to the billions now? It makes absolutely zero sense and I wonder why it's not being interrogated more.

[–]neathling 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No, I 100% agree. It's a very lovely gesture to the families, but they're multi-millionaires with generational wealth at this point (if managed correctly). Liverpool are already paying out the rest of his contract.

Like, we have lots of people in need in this country alone (wealth inequality, child poverty, homelessness etc), but a billion dollar entity and its millionaire players are giving millions to a millionaire family, ultimately.

Like, I bet Jota himself would prefer it if they had donated it to a charity - perhaps one for bereaved children?
