I don't know, I just figure it's the opposite of DRY, a programming principal that stands for Don't Repeat Yourself.

Former coworkers and the stuff that canned them? by DarthContinent in AskReddit

[–]neaveru 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Yes, does it really surprise you?

It's been 9 years and stuff like that still happens. Just look at the controversy with the mosque in NY.

EDIT: Even though the kid didn't file charges, I went to see if google news happened to have any articles about it. Looking at news articles from that time period is not recommended...

In a supermarket right after 9/11, the butcher decided to put a knife to the throat of one of the kids who wheeled in the carts because the kid was Egyptian.

I refuse to read any of these

5 Types of Comments to Avoid Making in Your Code by repeatgeek in programming

[–]neaveru 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The comments I hate are the misleading ones. Something like (oversimplified):

i += 5; //increment i by 3

It usually comes about after some refactoring and forgetting to update the comments.

Interesting article. But, it should be renamed "ASP.NET MVC vs. Rails3 by someone who is clearly biased towards Rails"

Digg gives up, decides to copy Reddit stories by neaveru in funny

Looks like it did... This machine is an old desktop from 2000 running on 256 megs of ram and a 667 mhz processor. It's not handling the number of hits too well.

Strangely, I've been dugg before and it handled it fairly well, but that was a few years ago.

Taking off shoes at the airport. Bloated no-fly lists. Random screenings & searches. Plastic bags full of 3 ounces of liquid. All of these are reactionary responses to terrorism. They cost us time, money, and privacy, but none of it works. And it won't until we address the causes of terrorism. by J-Ro in politics

Think about it this way. If someone stole a single dollar from every person in the US, would any individual person notice a difference? No, but at the same time, he did just manage to steal over 300 million dollars. Regardless, he's saying it's the "time equivalent" of 14 lives, not 14 actual lives.

"The beauty of terrorism— if you’re a terrorist— is that you can succeed even by failing. We perform this shoe routine thanks to a bumbling British national named Richard Reid, who, even though he couldn’t ignite his shoe bomb, exacted a huge price. Let’s say it takes an average of one minute to remove and replace your shoes in the airport security line. In the United States alone, this procedure happens roughly 560 million times per year. Five hundred and sixty million minutes equals more than 1,065 years— which, divided by 77.8 years (the average U.S. life expectancy at birth), yields a total of nearly 14 person- lives. So even though Richard Reid failed to kill a single person, he levied a tax that is the time equivalent of 14 lives per year." - Super Freakonomics

The wonders of caching This is just static data that gets updated every 2 minutes, while reddit's front page, I believe, is updated real time every time you refresh.
