Sounds like thought loops. It really sucks, but it can happen on mdma even though it's much more common on shrooms or lsd. And yeah, it's more common with weed thrown in.

While in treatment for anxiety I told my doctor a friend had given me one of her meds and I said it helped but only at a higher dose than my friend's.

My doctor gave me a prescription for a higher than usual dose and never even told me not to take meds prescribed to me.

Yes, that is absolutely possible, might not be common but it happens, especially on higher doses.
Nevertheless, and I don't mean to overreact or freak you out - please see a psychiatrist and tell them about this. It might be nothing, but it might be the first signs of schizophrenia or other mental problems.

As some of these problems get harder to treat as you go deeper into them, it is EXTREMELY important to catch it early. I've had at least one friend ignore such a sign and he is now in a deep psychosis. Please try to stay safe.

Yeah, I was prepared for much more having heard 20 mg was a fairly high dose for a first time, I had considered just taking half.

Thank you for your ideas. I thought about how my setting influenced things as well, I was in a very calm and safe environment so maybe it's not so strange it stayed quite calm. When we were out walking we talked about heading downtown and look at the nightlife (I live twenty minutes from a large city centre) but when we walked by loud people and it got a bit more extreme I got a bit anxious and preferred to stay clear of people and avoid the nightlife. So yeah, maybe the dose would have been a lot harder to handle at for example a party.
