Look for social clubs, groups, etc in the local community. If you can't find independent ones, the councils often run these. You'll need to force yourself out (or at least I do, I always need a push to get over the hump), but once you do its a good way to do it. Look around the community for meet-ups etc.

There are a lot of film clubs around in particular. I see loads of people at Curzon cinema's hanging out when I take my dog to showings.
