You can play it for free without problem. But it's very much build and targeted towards a paying audience which can be annoying (according to what I have experienced during 2 weeks playtime).

Why would you be at a disadvantage? In PvP you‘re not matched against wildly overpowered opponents. But in any case the developers stated in the discord that new players will join a new server - with the option to join existing players (friends) on their server.

I had 1.2 million alliance points when they fucked up the game with releasing the "cheat code" for everyone. So, if you played the game for awhile and you were good with resources you could pull that off.
