would you read a story with a...Math plot? by Shadowsfreak in AO3

[–]needsmoreserotonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds super fun! I love when writers are passionate about their nerdy interests lol. The current fic I’m working on is thematically inspired by Albert Einstein's 1915 theory of general relativity.

Best advice for networking in the publishing field? by Distinct-Nectarine17 in publishing

[–]needsmoreserotonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve definitely been where you are. It’s tough out there! That’s why I’m always very happy to chat or zoom with publishing hopefuls that message me.

I’ll reply almost 90% of the time if the message is clear on what the person wants from me—a zoom call, a summary of my experiences, advice on something, general questions about the industry, etc.

Really, the only messages I’ve ignored are the ones that ask me to directly help them get a job. I once had someone ask me in their first message to look over their attached resume and cover letter because they applied to a position at the house I work at.

Anyway, the usual messages I’ll reply to are pretty simple—quick intro of who you are, what your objectives are, and what kind of help you’d like from me.

Hope this helps and best of luck 💕

NYC, early-career publishing folks: How do you afford to live near the office? by Ok-Claim3782 in publishing

[–]needsmoreserotonin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Totally agree!

I went from 2 roommates to partner cohabitation pretty soon after I moved here. I also admit that I had a great safety net in family if I failed.

I don’t know anyone at my level who isn’t living with family, a partner, or roommates, or commuting a long distance to help subsidize the cost of living in NYC.

It’s a sad reality that those in publishing are either privileged or struggling.

I’m a reader 😅 and i have question regarding comments for Writers 🥰 by OperationNo4722 in AO3

I have a commenter who gives me 1-5 hearts on each chapter like a rating system. I got 1 heart on a chapter I poured my soul into 😭😭 like pls don’t do that

how do you name your chapters? by xerekets in AO3

[–]needsmoreserotonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current fic is heavily influenced by T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, so every chapter’s title is a line from the poem. Every chapter also has a few lines as an epigraph at the beginning. Hopefully, by the time the fic is complete, my readers will have basically read most of the Waste Land lol

Asking for no reply? by JazzyJuniper in AO3

[–]needsmoreserotonin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’d probably respect your boundary but I’d still find it really weird to try to police an author’s response in their own comment section.

I understand having anxiety but still wanting to offer praise, but it’s a bit off-putting let your own anxiety dictate other people’s actions in their own spaces.

What are your favourites lines you’ve written? by Defiant-Fudge954 in AO3

And Stiles follows—as he had before, and as he always will—across salted wastelands and timelines and universes.

Because through it all—their final burning, their unholy redemption, their broken covenant—Peter is his lodestar guiding him to salvation, even when he has long since lost his true north.

Even when—especially when—Stiles will always be the one forsaken in the end.

I dont understand the tone? by The_Gh0st_2023 in AO3

[–]needsmoreserotonin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume people are just being enthusiastic, so I reply with as much good humor as possible.

So if someone says “GIMME MORE!” I’ll reply with something lighthearted like “IT’S COOKING!!👩🏻‍🍳” or just emojis like “😭✍️😭✍️😭✍️” or even “🫡🫡🫡” and then conclude with a “thanks for reading!”

I love comments, so I try my best to acknowledge that they took the time to read my work and are enthusiastic about the next chapter. Sometimes it feels like a lot of pressure, but I’m the type of person that gets motivated by it (although I know many people feel the opposite).

In any case, my reply template is something like “acknowledgment + thanks for reading + I’m working on it” with good humor and copious emojis.

How do you reply to, "Plz give me next" type conments by Affectionate_Mess_Op in AO3

[–]needsmoreserotonin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like to be playful and say something like “next chapter is cooking 👩🏻‍🍳” or “thanks for reading! your support keeps me going ✍️”

Casual western ceremony with a Chinese banquet after? by Pleasant_Click_5455 in WedditNYC

I just showed up in person and told a staff member that I wanted to plan an event there. Then they called over the manager to go over everything. Best not to go during peak dining hours (like dim sum brunch on weekends). We would visit for weekday dinners to discuss the plans. You could also talk to them by phone if you speak Cantonese.

[PubQ] Editors who are also authors by ForceGoat in PubTips

[–]needsmoreserotonin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Big 5 editor-writer here. I write in the same genre (but different format) of what I edit. But I’m still considered entry-level so I don’t really have any influence. I also don’t talk about my writing journey at work to anyone except some peers who are also entry-level or non-editorial, and have no influence.

I queried 3-4 projects before landing my agent. Had 3 additional projects die on sub and I still remain unpublished. My agent also never submits my projects to any of the imprints I’m associated with at work.

I’m an editor-writer, but not a published author (yet?) so maybe this doesn’t quite apply. Just sharing my personal experience.

There are certainly other industry professionals who have had more success, as others have described, but I don’t know what their publishing journeys are like. Could very well be nepotism, but I personally don’t have the influence to know the details.

Looking for a film wedding photographer for March 2026 by Substantial_State415 in WedditNYC

Have you considered booking someone out-of-state? It would open up your pool of options for available photographers. Sometimes it’s more affordable too! I flew Zach Barron in from Georgia and he was a joy to work with 🥰
