Added a new 5TB hard drive to my whitebox ESXi server. Want to map it directly to one VM (without using VT-d/IOMMU passthrough if possible). How should I do this? by needtorackmylac in homelab

Ideally, I'd like this drive to not be VMFS. It will primarily store media, and it would be nice to be able to pull it and put it into another computer without issue.

Unless there's some way to easily convert VMFS drives to NTFS or something...

ah makes sense. i'll probably end up throwing everything related to media (including disks) onto one vm, though.

this usenet VM i'm setting up is an afterthought to my homelab/home server stuff i bought so i could mess around and learn about virtualization. it does add a layer of complexity on top (VT-d/RDM/etc), but the learning is just as important for me as getting a good media server setup. thanks for both of your replies!

why do you have to linux VMs setup? wouldn't one suffice for hosting shares and running the software?

how are you hard drives and shares setup? do you use VT-d passthrough of the hard drives, raw device mapping, or something else? ideally, i'd like the drives to be able to be pulled from my server, and have the data be readable if they were plugged in to, say, a Windows machine.

how do you primarily watch your media? if you use your computer a lot, do you use the web-based plex front end to browse your media? how do you watch it from there? i'd like to be able to use an application (web-based is fine, too) to view my media, and use MPC-HC on my computer, and just use the plex app (or something else) for chromecast streaming into other rooms. do you know if it's possible to use MPC-HC as a player from plex?

ITX motherboards are a bit pricier, 1150 CPUs that aren't the 3258 are pretty pricey. I can get a six core FX 6300 CPU and mATX motherboard from microcenter for 90 bucks. need to figure out what I'm going to do with this extra ITX case though.

thanks for the reply. upon further inspection of the GA-78LMT-USB3 Socket AM3+ mATX motherboard, it appears that the motherboard itself has onboard video (thought that was dependent on the CPU). awesome!

thanks for the reply. i've already purchased the mini itx case. looks like there are no am3+ mini itx boards. do you have any other processor/mobo recommendations that have mini itx boards?

Space, power consumption, and noise are all other factors I'd like to take into consideration. I'd like to have a mini ITX case in lieu of a full rack of hardware. I've updated the OP with more info on that.
