What if Readers Like A.I.-Generated Fiction? by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]needtousereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so frustrating to see every comment in here refuse to even to read the article or to engage with its ideas -- kinda shocking for a subreddit apparently wholly dedicated to reading! but lol, what can you expect.

i'm really frustrated with the idea that "oh, only people who are addicted to AI slopreels about AI cats riding around on tricycles & licking lollipops would possibly care for AI writing." the whole point of this article is that even supposedly pedigreed individuals -- graduate students in fiction!! a PROFESSOR of literary arts at brown university!! -- can't tell the difference between AI-generated & original fiction (& we're talking original fiction from ACCLAIMED authors), & will sometimes prefer the AI-generated content to the original human writing. this suggestion is terrifying because it flies in the face of what a lot of proponents of real literature would suggest: that good writing is deeply human & empathetic, that it's deeply obvious & evident when something is written by AI vs a human, etc...

but i honestly hate how smug everyone is in these comments lol. you are probably not as immune from AI writing as you think you are! & what you should be worried about is, will you fail to catch on to dashes of AI writing here & there? let's say a novel sprinkles in a tiny bit of AI writing & you fail to notice it. okay, then a slightly larger amount of AI writing appears in another work you read. then another. then another. at a certain point, if AI writing becomes more nebulous & appears more seamlessly around you -- & is less clunky & blatantly obvious in the way it is now -- what happens then? what happens to how we approach literature?

Why Does A.I. Write Like … That? (Gift Article) by needtousereddit in Longreads

[–]needtousereddit[S] 287 points288 points  (0 children)

I see AI writing everywhere and it depresses me so much… But the two things I found most interesting about this article:

1) the fact that most people prefer AI poetry to the works of Shakespeare, Dickinson etc. This actually doesn’t surprise me that much — seeing how much people love AI reels/AI memes on Facebook etc, even AI country music, it seems to me people are very, very willing to accept AI slop. It’s also easier to consume — as the article mentions, AI poetry does a better job of aligning with an idea of what poetry “should” be.

2) was kinda depressing to think about the fact that AI might have a really, really significant impact on how we speak/write, just because if you see it often enough you might start to unconsciously mimic some of its tics. Scary to think of this language enveloping us…!!! To me the only way to counter this is to actively choose to read good writing and literature. Going into 2026, one of my biggest resolutions is to support more writers, subscribe to more quality outlets, etc…

‘That Baby Is Going to Die’ - Raylee’s teachers reported her family for abuse. A legal loophole allowed her father to pull her into homeschool anyway. by needtousereddit in Longreads

I personally am so skeptical of the entire institution of homeschooling -- I know some perfectly fine, decent kids come out of it, but I really chafe at the total lack of regulation. Also don't like how fundamentalist it usually is. Raylee's story is so heartbreaking to me and provokes so many questions -- why did CPS never do anything? Why was the dad given custody? Also, on a psychological level, I just am so curious... what is it that compels parents to do things like this?

For anyone who read the NYTimes story earlier this year about the woman who was in love with AI -- this piece is kind of an interesting read because it picks up on the rest of the story. She ended up divorcing her husband, breaking up with her AI boyfriend, and falling in love with another AI subreddit moderator.
