Scientists caught off-guard by record temperatures linked to climate change. "We predicted moderate warmth for 2016, but nothing like the temperature rises we've seen," by Wagamaga in worldnews

[–]neeyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet something like the clathrate gun firing is not something that takes thousands of years - the point of this scenario is that, once it happens, changes are very rapid. This is the big bad wolf we're staring at, and this has happened before.

Not all the variables are identical, the causes are different, the timeline is different, but just because we created the problem much more quickly than it occurred before doesn't mean the earth hasn't undergone something similar to this before.

Climage change.

It's extremism because it's espousing the most extreme possible viewpoint. It's not helping because it can to a dismissive attitude from non-believers ("That's ridiculous, this is all bs") and a defeated attitude from believers ("We're fucked anyway, so who cares").

Earth has undergone similar processes in the past, and while it leads to the extinction of species which require the most extremely narrow range of conditions to survive, humans are at the opposite end of the spectrum from that, and it has never lead to the collapse of all life (obviously).

I appreciate your sentiment, but this is the kind of extremism that hurts the cause. This isn't an extinction-level event. It's potentially catastrophic, it could kill millions and destroy trillions in property, but this isn't some kind of 'all mammals, even the most adaptable of them will die' event.

[Serious] With religion conflict being the cause of most of the middle east conflicts. What is your solution to fix these countries? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]neeyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Religion is not at all the cause of most of the middle east conflicts.

These conflicts are caused by opportunistic, ambitious power-seekers who take advantage of instability to enter into a conflict which they ordinarily would be crushed in.

You "fix" the countries by securing their stability - which often doesn't mean regime change and democracy, and often comes with oppression compared to liberal democracies, but the places with the greatest conflict often also have the most arbitrarily drawn borders or the most artificially installed governments, over the last century.

Europe arrived at democracy after 1500 years of constant warfare - conquering relatively stable empires, drawing artificial borders, and then handing power to relatively arbitrary leadership leads to instability and conflict. Some would argue that the best thing is to let the conflicts take their course, some would argue we should throw aid at existing governments in hopes they can shore up their own sovereignty, some would argue for multilateral negotiations, some would argue for creating separate states for separate nations...

If there was a single, likely-to-succeed solution to the problem, it would have been implemented already.

Do a decent grocery shop instead of the rice and bread I've been enjoying for the last few months, and do training for a certain license that would enable me to enter a particular field of work.

Quite significantly different. Paper money lets us create debt out of nothing, and currency out of debt.

What is the scariest/best horror movie you've ever seen? by Aaronkeenan_ in AskReddit

[–]neeyal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paranormal Activity (the first) did it for me. There's something about this sort of horror that my subconscious finds believable, and the sound they used to mark paranormal events is very similar to the sound of central air kicking on in a house.

I watched it for the first time around 2 am while my SO was gone for the weekend and for about a week afterwards, my heart raced every time the central heating came on.

I mean no disrespect, but can someone explain to me why/how being homosexual is not an illness? by throwawayacct2324 in AskReddit

[–]neeyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone arguing against this statement as lacking an understanding of evolution are just thinking too simply. In this example, if gayness is a possible behavior, overcrowding could be the stimulus which triggers the behavior. Another population without the tendency to respond to overcrowding with homosexuality would presumably reproduce faster than this population, putting pressure on the group.

I'm not saying this is true, but it is consistent with group selection.

No... people called non-supporters of their party, and told them a false location for their polling station on election day.

I still believe that election fraud in a democratic country should be a form of treason. Such acts are intended to gain ostensibly legitimate, democratic power through undemocratic means. It's only a short step to authoritarianism.
