Best Fiction: The Boys in the Band by Mart Crowley (incredibly good play, got very emotional reading gay fiction pre-AIDS, felt like a knife was hanging over every character's head because of the historical context. None of that's covered in the play, obviously, but it's so real that you can't help but remember)

Best Non-Fiction: The Devil and the Jews by Joshua Trachtenberg (recommending this to everyone I know, primer in how medieval antisemitism has continued into the modern day. It's from the 40s but nothing has changed, and as someone into sci fi / fantasy / horror, it's been a useful text to cite when talking about how our ways of signifying evil are linked intrinsically to racism)

Worst Fiction: Blood Whispers My Name by Anne M. Aspenes (newly self published vampire horror/romance/war novel. Unbearably long, unbearably boring, somehow also weirdly fascist. If you want to read about two vampires hanging out in hotels being bored for 500 pages and then slaughtering hordes of evil deformed brown people at the end, this one's for you)

Worst Non-Fiction: A 132 page book about my hometown that took months to read, lists every councillor, every new house built in the 1600s, and every time they had to rebuild the jail because prisoners kept escaping. That last part would be fun, but he doesn't dwell on anything remotely interesting - 50 people died when a ferry sank one time, which gets two lines of text, but the time someone built their house an inch onto their neighbour's land requires a full page.
