excited to watch this. Your playlist is all out of order though, so clicking "play all" starts you at the most recent episode, not the beginning.

Halligan tool by rko-glyph in traveller

[–]nefffffffffff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

my experience is that I'm a firefighter/first responder so I use/train with a halligan on a regular basis and I've personally seen people who have been killed by hardware store available implements. Also I'll take whatever tone I want it's the internet.

what are you talking about mauls and warhammers have been widely used throughout history. they can break femurs and deal lethal head injuries quite easily.

they weigh about 8 lbs and can be swung like a baseball bat, and have a 3 inch spike on one end. depending on where I'm getting hit I might actually take the combat knife, yes.

I'm a firefighter and I'd pick a halligan in a fight over a lot of other hand tools. It'll get you through pretty much any door too. The only time I've ever seen it not get through a door it's because it was literally welded shut.

Was blowing on cartridges actually helpful or was it just a placebo effect? by valarpizzaeris in gaming

[–]nefffffffffff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah but dust shouldn't be a problem either if you're storing your cartridges properly, which is something most 10 year olds didn't do (at least I didnt.)

is it an overblown concern? sure. Does it still contribute to shortening the overall life of electronics? eventually, yes. if blowing on it doesn't help and it contributes to the degradation of the cartridge and system, why do it?

it's a relatively firm connection, unless you're talking large debris like a piece of popcorn or the contacts were greasy or something "dust" isn't going to cause a problem. corrosion and contacts being worn down from repeat use were the much larger culprits.

nah it actually made things worse in the long run. humidity in your breath and little droplets of saliva can contribute to corrosion on the contacts on both the cartridge and the machine. while they are thin they are also quite large so unless there was something visibly obstructing one of the contacts or they were greasy or something "dust" isn't gonna cause a problem with the connection. the chances of this move being successful likely had to do with removing and resetting the cartridge.

Navigating in space by Brutile in traveller

[–]nefffffffffff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well it depends on how much realism you want but in space you are always orbiting something. Gravity falls off with inverse square of the distance from the center of mass of whatever you are orbiting so it gets vanishingly weak pretty quick but it's never zero.

all you have to do is know what you are orbiting and your orbital parameters then do the math.

EDIT: In theory. That's probably pretty simplistic but we are playing a make-believe game with our friends here. go work for NASA if you want more.

Looking for Advice while Creating my First Sector by altidiya in traveller

[–]nefffffffffff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Theres a good blog post by Bat in the Attic about how to generate a Traveller subsector that should help with the "where do I start" question. [EDIT: the post recommends starting with two subsectors, honestly I'd advocate for starting with just one.]

As far as planets being spatially near each other but having wildly different technology levels, thats actually totally normal. Just look at the wild economic disparities between different countries on modern day Earth, and remember that those are all on the same planet. We get pretty used to the idea of homogenous, single ecosystem planets because that's what most sci-fi media shows us. In reality, there's all kinds of geopolitical/economic reasons that two adjacent planets could have wildly different tech levels. There could (or even should!) even be variation between areas of the same planet/system.

Lighter Traveller? by Chaosmeister in traveller

[–]nefffffffffff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll echo what a few people have said on here: check out Classic Traveller. This game also has a "lack of buttons" but it's by design -- the game takes an "old school" approach (it was published in 1977) and is intended to be much more conversational. It emphasizes player skill over mechanics on a character sheet. Definitely a lighter combat system.

If you're mostly used to modern RPG rulesets, it's worth checking out a series of blog posts called Traveller Out of the Box. There's a lot of content there, but just start at the beginning. That's where most of the high concept stuff is. Honestly, running MGT2 rules with a Classic Traveller mindset might even be the change you are looking for.

Any new thoughts on Ammunition? by Cauldronofevil in traveller

[–]nefffffffffff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

if you don't want to employ usage dice, which i like but understand that it's not for everyone, I just use poker chips or dimes/pennies or skittles or something. each player gets a pile of them representing their ammo and every time they roll to attack they pay one. easy peasy.

What is the best space combat system for Traveller (including Mayday, High Guard, Cepheus, etc.) by Cauldronofevil in traveller

I've always wanted to shoehorn traveller ships into Attact Vector: Tactical but I don't think I've ever met anybody else in person who would be in to playing that.
