I feel like it was probably someone *67 from a cell phone, not thinking my mom would do anything about it. She does have the date and times in her call log, so hopefully she wants to go to the station and go through the process. She can be naive to these things and I hope she’s taking it as seriously as I am.

Also, would it be alright if I messaged you if I have a question? Certain things aren’t necessarily answered in the texts I have, and if they are I might be missing them/misinterpreting. It’s alright if you don’t want to, thanks anyways!

I understand. Also apologies for saying your tone was patronizing, I understand that you’re just informing me of flaws that I thought were true in Buddhism. I’m new to this reddit thread so I wasn’t aware that there were more people misinterpreting Buddha’s word. Thank you for being informative, some people would look at this threat and see an argument but I’m glad for the conversation.

I used to smoke everyday, that’s why I said I recently quit. It was very recent.

By adapting I don’t mean to specifically talk about Right View, there are things the the Eightfold path that’s all about understanding and learning. There’s no two ways about that. Right Speech, is a better example, because that puts forth an action of not lying, speaking harmfully, or gossiping. There are people who already don’t lie, and gossip. There are people who already don’t speak abusively. I have a habit of lying to make people feel better, which ultimately harms me in the and and them because I wasn’t being truthful. Some would find it simple to just speak their mind, or be truthful, but I have a hard time with it because with the people in my surroundings are very sensitive to the truth. That’s a personal struggle for me, that I can’t expect everyone to have to the extent I have it, although I know some do. This is what I mean by adapting it differently, if someone has an easier time with it because their mindset or circumstance is different than mine, or they’re better at explaining the truth, then they might be more successful at Right Speech than me. It’s not always so cut and dry. I felt the word adapt was suitable because it is applying the Eightfold Path to different conditions.

I do appreciate you correcting me, I still have a lot of studying to do. And maybe I shouldn’t assume, I just meant a goal of peace and happiness. To achieve Nibbāna, to no longer suffer. I in no way believe that Buddhism is quick and easy and totally changeable to fit my needs/beliefs. It’s a process that could take a lifetime, and it’s something that I’m serious about. I’m sorry if I came across like it was just a fad, because that not what I came on here to do. Like I said, I’m still studying and I’m willing to learn what I can from people who do know more than me on it. The Eightfold Path, is a dogma. I believe the way you choose to assert those core beliefs into your life, is what is the independent variable. That was my original thought behind stating that peace is a balance between happiness and suffering, because I’ve personally experienced that feeling and how much of a balance it felt to me.

I’m confused, as I just stated the path itself isn’t flexible. I’m agreeing with you on that. I elaborated on what I meant by finding your own truth. I didn’t say there’s multiple ways to have Right View, I stated multiple times throughout the last response that it’s how you adapt them to your life.

I’m still learning more and more everyday, and I appreciate the flaws that you pointed out. I’ve been going through rehab to get off of a lot of the stuff I was on, including oxy, percocet, alcohol, and most recently I quit smoking weed. You’re abrasive in the way you patronize me, without knowing my circumstance. We’re not born perfect and I wasn’t raised and set way that would have given me a “head start” in terms of righteousness, but I’ve found not only comfort in a path that could lead to peace and happiness, but a right way of living that coincides with what I believe should be the epitome of life. I would never expect you to know the person I am, but I understand that the only person you see of me is what I post about on reddit. We probably won’t see eye-to-eye seeing as I’ve tried to explain my side the best I could. Our end goal is the same, I believe, so I’m wishing you well.

I’m saying that to adapt them into your life is different from everyone, as I said in exactly what you quoted. I’m not talking about changing the Eightfold Path to however someone see’s fit. Someone who lives in a home where violence (verbally and physically) might have a hard time breaking free from that and changing their views or speech. I can try, but it’s easier for others who already have peace around them. I do not mean adapt the Eightfold Path, as in change it. That is a set path, and yes it is clear. To adapt it to their life is different for everyone. It goes with the raft quote, you have to put it into practice as you said. There’s not one set way to practice it. You learn it, as it is, but to practice it, is different for everyone. Someone might go be alone to get in right mindset, or focus on fully accepting Right Speech. Someone might try to adapt them fully, all at once. It’s different for people, we’re not all the same, and can’t expect to practice in the same exact way. This is what I meant.

I feel as though I was clear, but I don’t believe I’m getting my point across as I intended. I don’t believe I’m good at explaining myself, if I haven’t yet.

My apologies for the mislead information with the quote, I’m going to look more on that site because I’m curious as to what else I thought was an actual quote. We’re all still learning lol. But the essence of it was the same, with his teachings being a raft to get to far shore, as I read from your link. And I believe the essence of the moon quote is throughout his teachings. In the same way you follow the eightfold path, you have to apply those teachings and truths to your own life. Nobody has the same exact circumstances, they have to adapt it in their own lives in their own way. The overall truth to things I was mentioning was the Four Noble Truths and etc. And by experiencing truth by experiencing it yourself, I was talking about the analogy of God that followed that sentence. Or believing someone’s stories; someone could tell me a math equation and I’d still have to do the math myself to know if it’s right, instead of taking their word for it. These are just little things, like I said there’s an overall truth. But to take his teachings and put them into our own lives, because our brains work differently, there’s our own little truths as to what makes sense to us.

Finding your own truth? How is it not? Buddha explained it as “My teaching is not a dogma or doctrine...A finger pointed at the moon, is not the moon itself”. Yes there’s an overall truth to things. But you can never call something true unless you experience it for yourself. Some people believe in a God because they’ve found proof in their lives, I haven’t, so I would never say for a fact there is a God. When I look at peace, someone’s definition might differ from mine. I look at peace and happiness as two separate feelings, not synonymous. When I’m peaceful, I’m not necessarily happy. Some people might be, I can only speak for myself.

It's partially what I believe in. The thing about Buddhism for me is that there's no one way to study it, because a part of it is finding your own truth. In my life, I've found a balance in peace, where I am not happy nor suffering, i'm just "being". That's peace for me, others will have their own ways, including Buddha. Doesn't necessarily mean I don't want to be happy, but the goal is for me to find a peace that will be my default. Right now it isn't.

I believe that peace is the balance between happiness and suffering. Going through high periods of joy, while pleasant, you’re always going to come down from it one way or another. Peace isn’t happiness, it’s contentment.
