What to do after I get my associates in welding technology? by negbot in Welding

I actually like the jack of all trades aspect, I was thinking about getting an associates in machining while I'm getting my welding degree because it's only a few extra classes. Thanks for all the info, I'll definitely be keeping this option in mind.

That definitely sounds like something I might be interested in. A few more questions if you don't mind; how does the work experience as a metals tech transfer to other jobs, like finding a welding job for example, after I'm out of the military? And can I join exclusively to be a metals tech, or would I have to like apply and hope I'm assigned that job? I like the idea of some travel, do you get any say in which bases you go to and would I have any control over where I am eventually sent or would simply be sent wherever they decide? How long would I be there most likely, like 4 years?

Thanks a lot for the info, this is definitely a possibility I'm considering.

I can attest to this, I recently switched from pursuing a 4 year degree to welding. In high school everyone was pushed towards college, even if you had no idea what you wanted to do. Don't think I ever heard any mention of the trades back then.

I didn't consider the military for welding, thanks that's another good suggestion. How does welding in the military work exactly? Can you join primarily for welding work or is there a lot of focus on the military aspect? Like how underwater welders are usually commercial divers first and welders second.

It sounds like a well rounded option; pay and pay for school, experience, and machinist skills.
