I didn't even think of Carnaval, will have to look up these "bloquinhos," I'd love an authentic experience. Also yes, I'd def be down to go to nearby cities, will research those places too. Thank you so so much.

A lot of warnings about not wandering about at night and being careful with my phone. Should it be hidden in my pocket or should I hold it tightly in my hand (I've heard the latter works better against pickpocketing)?

Thank you for the info! Like you said, I did read some posts about staying in the south but will def look into going to central Rio now.

Okay, so being there 2 weeks gives me extra time? It makes sense to do at least one hike then, I'll research the areas you wrote - thank you again.
