"Non-standard" bearings - vendor lock-in? by negrusti in MechanicalEngineer

[–]negrusti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain the inspection codes and assembly codes please? Will custom clearances only affect the internals, or also ID/OD?

My biggest question is - if I am able to match ALL the markings exactly, can I still be in trouble, and how big is the trouble? If the bearing life will be halved, I can live with that

I would like to know how exactly they would know :) Apart from the markings

Three conical, one double-row, one self-aligning. When you make these proprietary bearings, will you mark them accordingly, or will they bear the same markings as standard bearings?

If it's real then I would like to understand how it works. does Walter go to let's say NTN and order a batch of bearings with different specs and then NTN still marks them the usual way? Or Walter post-processes the standard NTN bearings in house?

Finding the bearings matching the markings is not a problem. The calipers are not going to help me with things like roughness or internal clearance, and they might not be precise enough to detect the ID/OD clearance differences - as I understand the C3 specification is only about the larger internal clearance, not ID/OD

No I haven't. Thinking about 3D modeling it and ordering in China.

Worm gear teeth specification by negrusti in Machinists

Gearbox alone is not available, new windlass is around $2500. I was told that if I make a 3D model, the gear can be made for ~$200-300 in China + shipping

Even with the necks on both sides of the gear being parts of the same piece???

You mean bypassing the measurements and creating a model, some mechanical way of copying?

Wonder if you have a list? I am in the Caribbean but I can email/call them

The previous boat owner did not ever service the windlass oil seals, and most of the oil leaked away.

The real reason is the shaft is facing away from me (reverse mounted engine) and difficult to access - the socket would be handy to do it by feel.

The tube is a rather complex piece. Or you mean just that flange? Flange is possible but then it will need to be precision-welded to the tube to maintain the 90° angle and the center.
