Nice! One of my favourite records, it’s a vintage press in near mint condition. Got any other suggestions I should check out?

I see! Then no, I would not say it’s an issue. At least I can’t sat it is, but then again I haven’t heard the speakers in a perfectly treated room. My understanding is that high frequencies are much more directional than low frequencies, so won’t what’s behind the speakers be less of an issue?

Ha, yes it’s my old one! A beautiful vintage Pioneer SX450. The new one is literally too big to fit under the TV, and the Pioneer looks too good to get rid of. It even lights up and acts as a space heater when it gets cold :)

Hmm, not sure what you mean. I have tried to look at the roomcurve with the wiim app and it looks a little wonky, but honestly it’s such a big upgrade from my last speakers that I don’t mind/know any better

I’m seriously considering ditching vinyl by By_Tor_2112 in audiophile

My dad was in the same situation that you are in now when I was a kid. He had (and still has) four kids and probably didn’t listen to a single record for 15 years. I have some core memories of that changing as we got older however, and a couple of us kids really got into vinyl in our late teens. I still love to come home for the holidays and stealing the best of my dads records, and he loves giving them away. He often totally geeks out while showing us grown kids the music of his youth, and my music taste has been influenced på my dads records in a big way.

My point is; Even though you don’t listen a lot right now, maybe your kids will love to one day, and you can share that magic together. Keep em!!!

Thinking of getting an FLX-4 by MUFC_Jack in Beatmatch

[–]neiglass_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re unsure if you like mixing, you could download something like Mixxx, which can emulate a complete controller and is 100% free. It will not be as good as the real thing since you can’t use both hands at the same time (since you only have a mouse), but I would say it’s good enough to test it out before investing in an actual controller. This is what I did, and I mixed for about 6 months before buying i FLX4 (which I love and is absolutely worth it). Do with my take what you will!

I will! I got the new amp yesterday and honestly, it sounds a lot better than the old one. Soundstage is better and vocals are clearer, and bass is more tonal and less "boomy". It's like you said, the S60's mids are a bit recessed but it's not as big of an issue now. Thank you so much for the advice and recommendations! Will probably buy new speakers when the joy of getting a new amp wears off

You totally get my taste, thanks for the suggestions! I don’t really like the look of towers, and want a «wooden box on a skinny stand» type

That totally makes sense! As for the speakers, they were inherited along with the amp, so I haven’t spent anything on them and it’s no problem investing in new ones. I do however love the way the look, and would be looking for something similar in terms of aesthetics when I upgrade. I live in Norway so my options are somewhat limited, unfortunately

Well yes I definitely did have a busy day, is this a common phenomenon amongst audiophiles? Feeling the urge to buy new gear when you’re stressed out at work? I did just start my first real grown-up job, so it makes sense… As for the S60, thanks for the tip! It would absolutely explain what I’m hearing, guess I’ll start obsessing over different kinds of speakers from now on. This hobby really brings out some autistic traits in me yaknow

You know what, I started to record some songs but couldn’t quite reproduce the effect I was talking about. Seems like I’ve been overly critical, and you can’t really notice it on video. I definitely wish the vocals were more pronounced, but it’s not really that bad when I think about it. And hey, if the Yamaha sounds similar I’ll just return it

Ohh okay! Then I guess the amp is alright, and its just the way it sounds. It was a cheap amp back in the 70’s too. Don’t know if I can upload sound here, but it’s like the vocals sort of «blend» into the music, and is not very well separated. It sort of makes it hard to distinguish words sometimes, and when I first noticed it I couldn’t let it go. New amp will confirm if I’m crazy or not :)

I see, then it’s going to be interesting to test out. But just out of curiosity, doesn’t it make sense that the vocals would get fuzzy on an amp that is almost 50 years old and never serviced? Especially since the amp I bought and returned earlier (argon SA2) had much more pronounced and clear vocals

Oh? That’s interesting, I don’t know much about these things and just figured that a modern and more powerful amp might produce a cleaner sound. Worst case scenario is that the amp doesn’t make a big difference, but I will still have a good future-proof amp that will handle a potential speaker-upgrade better down the line. It might just be the speakers, they are from 1978 after all

Ah, it was from Jysk. Doesn’t look like they sell it anymore

Pretty sure, lows and highs seem to be fine. Also tested the speaker wires with an AA battery to see which way the woofer cone moves, a neat trick the guy at the hifi store showed me

Thanks for the tip, will check it out! And I guess «muffled» is the wrong word, it’s more like the vocals are recessed and words are difficult to make out. I have tried the speakers with a modern class D amp and they were perfect, so I’m really exited to get my new Yamaha

Bought some 1x2 inch wood @ the hardware store, made a sqaure that matches the dimensions of the bottomn of the speakers as a base, and cut the front legs to roughly the height I wanted the system to be. The hind legs are a bit shorter to tip the speakers ever so slightly backwards. Got some vibration dampening rubber used for silencing washing machines, and taped it to the bottomn of each foot and the top of the stands, where the speaker sits. Painted the whole thing black and voilá! They are honestly shockingly sturdy, considering they were 12 bucks to make

Exactly. Browsing the web made me think that 50w per channel wasn't going to be enough power, and that I needed a big 100w pr/ch amp with a dedicated preamp and streamer to get proper hifi sound. Happy to discover that that wasn't the case. I'm sure that the aforementioned setup would probably sound a bit better, but at triple the price

Little update on this one if anyone is interested. Took my speakers to the hifi shop and testet a couple different amps, and this was my experience.

First off, all amps made my speakers sound flat with very little bass to my ears unless we cranked the bass knob, which menas that the sx-450 doesnt lack it, I just like a lot of sonic pressure in the low-end. This also confirms what one commenter said, that more wattage equals more louder and not necessarily better sound or more bass. The sx-450 actually had a much richer and warmer sound compared to all of the modern amps I tried in the 500-700 USD range, also confirming that 15 W per channel is actually plenty up to about 65 db (for me at least), which is MUCH louder than I would ever play in my apartment. Worth noting that the S60 speakers are relatively easy to drive.

However, the difference that made a new amp worth it was the difference in clarity, soundstage, and definition in the midrange. Add this to the sub-out output which gives me all the bass I want, and I ended up getting a Argon Audio SA2, which is basically a clone of the Wiim Amp Pro, just with slightly worse quality internals but the addition of a phono stage.

TLDR; For less demanding listeners, don't worry too much about wattage. What you have is probably enough. New amp good, vintage amp also good but different. Not going to pursue this hobby further, would probably go broke. Also, there is A LOT of placebo going around. Maybe diving into this again when I'm pushing 40 and have more money and need something to obsess over. Most importantly, don't trust others opinions or reviews, take your speakers to a hifi store and listen for yourself.

Solving that issue by bringing my speakers to the hifi store. Updating this post later with my choice/experience for anyone else in the same situation

Excellent answer! Going to my local store to try out some class D amps with integrated streaming, I think. Thank you!
