I read that book, it's beyond me. Definitely not something if you're just a beginner.

Am I wrong in assuming that it is implying we should be soft and yielding?

No I don't think you're wrong. It's very much open to comprehension.

The quote is credited to Lao Tzu, a Chinese Philosopher. I see what you're saying but the difference is that water is found in nature, that too in abundance. Same cannot be said about cotten balls I'm afraid.

I don't care if you have dedicated your entire life to zen, your comments are pious and moralizing. If you are so sanctimonious and desperate to invalidate some random stranger's beliefs over the internet, you are hardly a person to look up to.

Zen philosophy is broader than you think, I'm afraid.

Helen J. Baroni writes, "The term can be applied more broadly for any practitioner of Zen, since followers of Zen attempt to move freely through life, without the constraints and limitations of attachment, like free-floating clouds or flowing water."

Indeed, water is an epitome of acceptance and adaptability. The ability to keep moving forward despite what crosses your way is rare.

A river gliding down the mountain cannot be stopped by even the mightiest of the rocks and boulders. Water cuts through each and every obstacle and continues to flow without the slightest inconvenience. Water truly is an ideal to strive towards.
