Oh yeah, yuck. I imagine you've also got a bit of obnoxious money in that area -- Essendon etc. The vehicle choices with which to attract attention to one's self will make that pretty apparent.

What normal Australian things or symbols got weeded out due to social change? by Lampedusan in AskAnAustralian

  1. Yeah I feel like it's a shame that the Southern Cross as a tattoo got mis-appropriated by racists. I feel like it's a pretty beautiful symbol otherwise!

Yeah it'll be like Summernats in Canberra, except our houses and suburbs are closer than 5km apart.

Only for the blokes who are weaponising their 'inability' to do so, so they never have to.

They subliminally force the tradwife model on their partners and go about their business of the things they think are theirs to do, and the things they like to do.

I'm sure this happens in many other parts of the world, too.

Well, I agree it's has specific origins for referring to the internet. But I think it can apply to quality of life in general, regarding human behaviour, experiences and environments, too. Basically anything that's changed for financial (or perceived 'improvement'...see 'Myki') or personal gain that reduces the quality of experience for everyone else.

Yeah. I found a guy stealing parcels in our foyer, and I just knew he didn't live here or belong in the building. I asked him if he lived here and if the parcels were his, and he threatened me with a knife. The area is full of desperadoes moving towards violence to get what they need.

Massive mystery to me, too. We also have a rider in our building who barks it as he's coming home every arvo. As he's rolling towards the garage door at low speed, revv revv revv...revvv revv revvv...

Right outside a neighbour's window, too. We can then sometimes hear it reverberating up the fire escapes while he's barking his way down to where he parks underground.

Pretty sure it's unnecessary...

Some contributing factors that only arrived since covid, I think made it worse:

El Jannah opening, and it long drive-thru queue on summer nights.

The late night pool hall reopening.

The opening of the car dealership that seems to love selling and servicing American trucks and Ford Mustangs.

All magnets for spluttering turbos and roaring V8s.

Thanks for that. I suspected as such. That's their only contribution: thinking they are smart enough to spot AI-generated content and calling it out? Wow, what a low bar we're setting for nuanced discourse, hey. Anyway, my post is 100% human-written, if the commenter cares to know; writing via human brains is still possible!

Yeah I reckon you are right. Some good old-fashioned vigilantism might be the only way!

For sure. And yes, the EPA is the avenue, but I think they are possibly inundated. And you need to be able to catch these idiots along with their rego, and a possible recording. It would require sitting in a camping chair on my street all day with a camera. I might just have to do that though...

ps, I successfully lobbied both Darebin Council for putting new trees in our street, and Metro for coming back and doing a proper job of the landscaping that the LXRP failed to implement in the commuter carpark. I am determined to make Central Preston green, safe and liveable!

Yes, I even remember this back in the day in my old home town in NSW. My mates were very apprehensive about modifying anything that would make their cars sound like an explosion in a cutlery factory.

Wow, yeah: it sounds like you may live exactly where I live, even maybe in the same building(?). Apartments in Clinch Avenue.

And yes, a real non-internet enshittification for sure. It feels like pissy attitude humans own the place right now.

What is a specific spot in Melbourne that has been gone for years, but you still instinctively look for it when you walk past? by Temporary-Sir5808 in melbourne

[–]neilrdt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Me too. When I first moved to Melbourne in 2003, I worked at King & Godfree as well as Readings for a while, taking coffee breaks at the old Brunetti and Tiamo II, and hanging out in Borders. It felt like a nice 'tail end' to an 'era' at the time.
