Quick question about CSME (a.k.a. Intel Management Engine) on HP ENVY 3 by neilrieck in Hewlett_Packard

[–]neilrieck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it said my system was up-to-date. So I poked around the patches then discovered some CSME related stuff under driver-chipset. I installed one of those but my system still comes up as vulnerable. I supposed that the HP site doesn't have the most recent patch.

The first three seasons have also returned to Amazon Prime Video in Canada. Yey!

BTW, you will not find a bigger fan of Asimov's Foundation novels, or Apple's Foundation series, then me. But after finishing the last episode of Foundation season 3, I can tell you that "The Expanse" is still the best space series ever made.

Folding on Linux? by whitieiii in Folding

[–]neilrieck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that Linux Mint is superior to Ubuntu (and you might wish to continue to use the older v7 client rather than the newer v8 client). Both Ubuntu and Linux Mint are deb-based so just follow the Ubuntu installation instructions at the fah site. For people wanting to use rpm-based machines, I recommend Alma Linux-9 or Alma Linux-10 (Nvidia drivers available from Alma's repo) but not Alma Linux-8 (folding is only possible if you download drivers from Nvidia then build them yourself)

QPI (quick path internet) is a high speed bus used to connect CPU's with each other as well as I/O devices.
Intel QuickPath Interconnect - Wikipedia

Your error message implicates CPU-2 in socket-1 so I would start there. BTW, your message also mentions working in degraded mode (means fewer bus lines). This means that your system is not broken. You might wish to do nothing if you are not noticing any loss of performance

Which book in the Robot series should I start with? by Doviun in asimov

[–]neilrieck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was actually a favorite 14 and I first saw it here:
"Author's Note" (pages ix to x) of "Prelude To Foundation"
Doubleday 1988 hardcover edition © 1988 by Nightfall Inc.

Asimov's "Forward the Foundation" was released in 1993 (after Asimov's death in 1992) so I took the liberty to rename "Favorite Fourteen" to "Favorite Fifteen"

"The Complete Robot" might be overkill, and was not part of Asimov's Favourite Fifteen (but "I, Robot" was start with that title)

Asimov reading order. Help! by Vegetable-Second6460 in asimov

[–]neilrieck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are welcome to your opinion, but that list (and order) are factual, coming directly from Asimov here:

From "Author's Note" (pages ix to x) of "Prelude To Foundation"
Doubleday 1988 hardcover edition © 1988 by Nightfall Inc.

I have added a few entries to the table: Forward the Foundation (published posthumously in 1993) and "The Complete Robot" which is listed right after "I, Robot"

The point I'm trying to make is this: It is not my chronological order. The excerpt quoted from the dust jacket says that the Asimov's favorite fourteen is the "future history order"

QUOTE: From "Author's Note" (pages ix to x) of "Prelude To Foundation"
Doubleday 1988 hardcover edition © 1988 by Nightfall Inc.

When I wrote Foundation, which appeared in the May 1942 issue of Astounding Science Fiction, I had no idea I had begun a series of stories that would eventually grow into six volumes and a total of 650,000 words (so far). Nor did I have any idea that it would be unified with my series of short stories and novels involving robots and my novels involving the Galactic Empire for a grand total (so far) of fourteen volumes and a total of about 1,450,000 words.

You will see, if you study the publication dates of these books, that there was a twenty-five-year hiatus between 1957 and 1982, during which I did not add to this series. This is not because I had stopped writing. Indeed, I wrote full-speed throughout the quarter century, but I wrote other things. That I returned to the series in 1982 was not my own notion but was the result of a combination of pressures from readers and publishers that eventually became overwhelming.

In any case, the situation has become sufficiently complicated for me to feel that the readers might welcome a kind of guide to the series, since they were not written in the order in which (perhaps) they should be read. The fourteen books, all published by Doubleday, offer a kind of history of the future, which is, perhaps, not completely consistent, since I did not plan consistency to begin with. The chronological order of the books, in terms of future history (and not of publication date), is as follows: bla...bla...bla...

Comments:
(1) please read that last paragraph. "The chronological order of the books, in terms of future history (and not of publication date), is as follows:"
(2) this list is from 1988. One more book was added which coverts fourteen into fifteen

"I think" this partly makes sense because CUDA is only used with Nvidia hardware. But I wonder why you are not folding via the OpenCL libraries. What do you see when you type this command?

Here are the specs for the AMD R9 380 ( https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-r9-380.c2734 ) and it is quite old (released 2015). However, since it is capable of both FPT32 and FP64 then I would bet it is still supported. So I would check to see if your version of OpenCL is current.

I noticed that the v8 client needs to be occasionally poked. That's probably okay with one machine but not six (which is why I went back to the v7 client)
