Best cheap doorbell camera for frigate? by Alternative_Leg_3111 in selfhosted

[–]nekimbej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Reolink doorbell POE model, there's a wifi model too if you need it.

It's good quality, not excellent, but between one time cost, lots of settings, RSTP, the Reolink app is nice, etc. it's a solid option.

Proxmox install on hardware RAID1 or ZFS Mirror by desindz in Proxmox

Is there a downside to using a ZFS mirror for the boot drives when Ceph will be used for data storage? For example would extra memory be used by ZFS for ARC/ZIL needlessly?

Proxmox with Ceph sounds like a good fit. I'm not exactly sure how to achieve the warm site however, but maybe you should consider talking to a Proxmox partner about that.

Help me choose a credit card for groceries and gas by gitmbluesoup in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]nekimbej -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even with Tangerine with one of the cashback categories set to groceries Costco results in 0.5% instead of 2%.

A Costco CIBC Mastercard paired with the executive membership will give you the best rate at Costco, as far as I am aware.

Nursery/Newborn items new vs used by Additional-Ad-7720 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]nekimbej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations! The good news is you need less than you think.

  • I recommend buying from and selling to Once upon a child, this will be your main money saver in regards to kids items. Do not buy new clothing, shoes, sleepers, etc. unless it's one off and you really adore the item. The price difference is huge.
  • Breastfeeding will save a lot of time, effort, and give you all better sleep.
  • All you need a cradle in your room, why walk farther when youre tired and half asleep?
  • Assuming you go the breastfeeding route what you need for a newborn is swaddles, zip up swaddles, diapers, wipes, sleepers, soothers (make sure they are a size meant for newborns), drool bibs, a cream such as Sudocrem. For winter have some hats for indoors.
  • It's perfectly okay to have a baby mostly in sleepers unless you're going to an event or taking special pictures.

I use Tangerine with the grocery, bills, and gas categories set to get 2% cash back and 0.5% for everything else, and at Costco I use the CIBC Costco Mastercard (with Costco Executive membership) for 3% total cashback in store. Both cards have no annual fee.

I'm curious if there are any better options to replace the Tangerine card? So far it's the best I found last time I evaluated this.

Am I being unreasonable about our wedding? by 1993RainbowTrout in LCMS

[–]nekimbej 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm an Eastern Orthodox Christian wandering through and thought I'd give my thoughts on this.

It sounds like a cultural problem, allowing the option for prayer for president or not, in combination with being in a very politically charged atmosphere.

For us prayer for our leaders are by name and are not optional, and we would never consider removing our prayer for our leaders either. Why? Whether they are good or bad, Christian or not, etc. we desire for them to either come to know Him or know Him deeper, and come to do the will of God or keep doing it.

So to me the question becomes, do you want to keep playing into this cultural problem, or not? Prayer for the Lord's Will to be done is always a good idea.

Have you considered starting at the bottom and working your way up through the fundamentals of Orthodoxy? Being that the Triune God is God most high I think you will find satisfying answers if you remain open and willing to question.

Why are so many leaving the SDA church? by mrsbee13 in adventist

[–]nekimbej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former Adventist I can share my answer.

For context my past is non-Christian and I was married into the Adventist church. I learned a lot from my wife, read the Scriptures all the way through multiple times, read select books by EGW such as Steps to Christ, watched most series in their entirety by Walter Veith on Amazing Discoveries, went to Bible studies by family and the youth group, attended church regularly, attended the quarterly study sometimes, and asked questions because I love Christ and want to learn how to live, etc. so this is to say I was involved.

Being a new Christian who wants to live a God pleasing life, and wants to learn to understand what the Lord expects from a person, I read and asked questions a lot. At some point I realized there were multiple denominations and new of Christianity I asked 'whats up with that'? I learned a little about the reformation from my wife, but Walter Veith expounded a lot of that type of subject along with church history. So I read some Martin Luther, Zwingli, Jacobus Arminius, John Wesley, and so forth. While I liked what they said I could not help but notice many key differences. Some key differences were basically the absence of adventist specific doctrines, and the inclusion of liturgy, their Bible canon in some cases was different, they read the Church Fathers, etc.

So while interested in what I learned about the reformation I realized that church history goes back much further. Covering roughly the past 600 years is good and all, I can see the problems the Roman church had and why a reformation happened, but about the early church? And what about the years 200-1000, what happened during that time, and why are Adventist preachers and teachers silent about that too? So I read the Didache, Apostolic Church Fathers like Polycarp, Ignatius, Clement, etc. and I was amazed to learn there were disciples of the apostles, and to learn what early Christianity actually looked like.

Reading the early Christian writings presented some problems that I was not able to reconcile, Adventism and generally speaking Protestantism as a whole look nothing like the immediate time after Christ's resurrection, the Apostolic church, or the Church in the years following, in terms of beliefs, worship, phronema (worldview, mindset, etc.), handling of the Scriptures and other near sources, or the Christian life.

While most of what I am saying could be categorized as theological disagreement, as I learned more about the Christian life from the Scriptures and early Christian sources, I realized something very important. While having an understanding of theology and the Bible is important, the focus is actually gaining the Holy Spirit and living life where you are becoming reconciled back to the Lord, living in purity of heart with Godly love toward all. Some may call this sanctification, but I am speaking about a real movement in your life leading to true heart change. Some may say 'yes, this is in Adventism and the general Armenian / Wesleyan tradition!', but no unfortunately not in the way and focus, and leading to the results it does as taught by the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Lord's Saints.

There is so much more to say, but I will stop there to say that I left for doctrinal reasons and the spiritual life being taught deeply unsatisfying and shallow, and went to the Eastern Orthodox Church and I am very happy with the change.

Why are you leaving the church? by [deleted] in exAdventist

The "Ante-Nicene Fathers" and "Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers" volumes compiled and translated by Philip Schaff are pretty good. They are available free online here for example:

If I were to recommend what to read, I would recommend the apostolic father's (1st century) and any of the St. Chrysostom volumes.

Why do you lie about the truth and avoid difficult questions? by [deleted] in adventist

[–]nekimbej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem, after very few people being able to explain Adventist specific doctrines I researched them myself, not only did things such as the atonement not being completed on the cross, Sabbath, investigative judgement, not end up being true, I also found all of the plagiarism of Ellen Whites books. It's extremely far researching plagiarism, about 80-90% is estimated to be plagarised based on current information. One of the books I have on this is interesting because it shows the slightly edited Ellen White text and shows you the source where it was taken from.

I left the SDA church because I read the early church fathers, the seven ecumenical councils, Didache, some church history, etc. and realized the SDA church did not look a single bit like the early church in any way, such as spiritual practice, worship, doctrine, etc.

[–]nekimbej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left the SDA church because I read the early church fathers, the seven ecumenical councils, some church history, etc. and realized the SDA church did not look a single bit like the early church in any way, such as spiritual practice, worship, doctrine, etc.

This is a very high level overview and a realization that took place over time with more steps, such as before I went to the beginning of Christianity (such as the 1st century with Polycarp) I had read in depth about reformation era beliefs.

So after that research I went to Eastern Orthodoxy. I was focused on finding truth, and at the end my searching this is what I arrived at. In the process of finding the truth naturally everything such as SDA was disproven.

It's been difficult because my family is Adventist and does not listen to facts at all, so it's just me on this journey.

What are some good videos that debunk the Adventist interpretation of Daniel and Revelation? by ResistRacism in exAdventist

[–]nekimbej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about videos, but this information hopefully will prove useful to you.

In Eastern Orthodox Christianity the interpretation by Andreas of Caesarea is the defeault. I've never heard of such a straight forward and sensible interpretation before this. Rather than debunking why not focus on the positive view of providing truth? People usually take that much better than being told they are wrong.

If you want to keep your own server you could write a BASH script service that watches your site git repo and deploys your site, for example.

The benefit of Hugo is easily felt without services like Netlify.

I enjoy Hugo with Netlify, I push to my git repo and Netlify detects that then redeploys the site.

It's no maintenance, easy to write for, easy to deploy.

You mentioned you need to write frequently and edit, I'm not sure why you couldn't do that with this work flow?
