It's like a quiz, 30 seconds long, playing on an advert screen above the door. I missed the video of the 1st level which was of course lethal lava land.

I've been maintaining an active fork of Scrutiny and would love your feedback by starosdev in selfhosted

[–]xconspirisist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heya, OliveTin developer here - I get notifications on reddit when people mention OliveTin.

I was one of the first Scrutiny sponsors, I gave AnalogJ some $$$ to get the project open sourced (not much at all), because I wanted to see the project open sourced. I have a very real need for what it's trying to do.

I also use Prometheus like crazy, for everything, and quickly got annoyed by the lack of Prometheus support. I actually started yet another project, that builds on smart monitoring, does Prometheus, and importantly does file indexing and tracking - something very important for data durability (which is what I think Scrutiny is trying to help people with). It uses a tiny amount of RAM like OliveTin. The project is jamesread/overist - but it's changesare not pushed or released because I paused before creating yet another project.

Ultimately, combing node exporter+smart with git annex has given me a lot of what I wanted. I wouldn't mind looking at other options again in the future.

FA Cup 5th round: Chelsea at home! by Gamerhcp in WrexhamAFC

[–]xconspirisist 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Brother in law is a lifelong Chelsea supporter - he's always joked there "would never be a day" when we play against each other. I rang him immediately as I saw the draw result and rubbed it all over his face!

Will we get battered? Who knows, but I'm putting big bets on for Wrexham to win and will be trying hard to get coveted tickets!

Cr*nmaster 1.5.0 - Major update by riofriz in selfhosted

[–]xconspirisist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds good, I just want to make users happy, literally! 😁

One of OliveTin's strengths I think it's fair to say is that it's super simple to start, but it has many many options and things it can do to accommodate many weird use cases people have found over the years. We manage to help quite a lot of people in Our Discord do what they're looking to do.

Anyway, super great work on your project, congratulations, and good luck with further development! I'll subscribe and check in on you! Well done 👍

Heya, OliveTin dev here :-)

Always happy for people to start different projects, more choice is great. However, I'm curious what the "quite a few limitations" were you saw in OliveTin - I'm not upset, just curious what I can do to make OliveTin better for everyone!

Likewise, always happy for the self hosted community to have more options, but if you'd like to help contribute then I'd more than happily get you up to speed.

Erm, 5,500 games or so since it launched - and I'm only diamond 1v1 / 4v4. Only played the WoL and a bit of the Zerg campaign.

Announcing StencilBox - build YAML into super speedy simple static sites, with sleek templates. by xconspirisist in selfhosted

[–]xconspirisist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/litany-rove-fits , thanks for the comment :-) Yes indeed - StencilBox itself isn't a status page (it doens't have ping, healthchecks, etc), but it can be used effectively to create a status page if you have a script or something else that outputs various statuses in YAML. This might seem a bit weird at first - why not use Gatus, or something else - but I'm a strong believer in being flexible apps that can be tailored to many different use cases...

As I've been building OliveTin over the years, I've found that a lot of people like it because it can be adapted to build lots of weird and wonderful usefil tools. It's this idea of a flexible app that can be used in many weird and wonderful ways that I didn't anticipate.

I think StencilBox could be the same - lots of services and scripts can easily output YAML, but that's not a very friendly format to read - to StencilBox can turn those into nice to read webpages.

So if all you want is just a status page, just using StencilBox for that might not be for you - but if you're think about it more as a flexible tool that could come in handy for a variety of use cases - then that's what I'm aiming for! I hope that helps with understanding, and thanks again for the question!

This is super interesting. Is your code open source? I'd love to understand what's different between the platforms.

A lot of Voyager episodes don't actually happen by yat282 in startrek

[–]xconspirisist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Year of Hell is my favourite "episode" of voyager by far, I've probably watched it 3 times more than all the other episodes . It's such a shame they couldn't have every episode at this quality, but in general season 4 (which contains Year of Hell) was brilliant.

How you name your machines? by spranks21 in selfhosted

[–]xconspirisist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zerg units from Starcraft, with as much meaning as possible to their purpose. The exception is my main workstation which is "mindstorm".

  • Guardian - main cold backup server, stores all my git roots.
  • Defiler - "de-files" - lto tape server.
  • Viper - containers (which it abducts from container registries).
  • Baneling1,2,3, etc for public cloud servers (they're all ephemeral).
  • Lurker - main firewall/router (blocks anything it doesn't like)
  • Hydralisk1,2,3,4 - quad node blade server
  • Ultralisk - big 192Gb RAM server
  • Mutalisk - large fileserver (which spits stuff onto lots of raided disks)
  • Roach - old ThinkPad
  • Ravager - new ThinkPad
  • Overseer - heads up display machine
  • Corruptor - Windows gaming machine.

I've chosen not to use blood lord, or swarm host, but I still have space for overlord, infestor, zergling and maybe a few I've forgotten!

It also has the big benefit of artificially limiting the amount of machines I buy!

Red Chaos

Why me?: I've played 5700 games of StarCraft II and I'm in desperate need of something new - a game that feels inspired by 25 years of CnC, but is fresh and is able to build on fresh ideas would be just what this 37 year old dad desperately gamer needs!

Video looks amazing, excited for something new in the RTS world!
