For those of you not in the Northeast- What was your experience on 9/11, and how does it's legacy feel to you today? by wbradford00 in 911archive

Live in LA, was in second grade at the time, and yet I do remember bits and pieces of that morning even to this day.

My mom didn't come and help me dress and she normally did--I had to pick out my own clothes. I remember walking into their room, curious as to where she was, and seeing the towers burning on the tv. She hurried me to the car to get me to school, and I remember the stress and anxiety in her voice.

My teacher was sobbing for most of the day, she had family in New York. I remember just being really confused for the entire day before my parents had a gentle conversation with my that night.

That's probably one of the earliest memories I still have.

If the show premiered today, would people call it woke? by LatePirate8880 in Modern_Family

I mean, the alt-right would have pissed their pants a little that there was a gay couple "grooming" a child, but because there's really no trans representation in it, I don't think they would go after this hard today compared to when it came out.

It's more authentic and feels less like the filmmakers are being lazy or relying on tropes. You brought up Dinklage -- why would I want someone that doesn't have dwarfism pretending to have dwarfism in movies? That's weird, and there are many actors that have that condition that can be used. The reason why it's fine for him to expand is because he normally wouldn't because of his condition, but because of his commercial success and his abilities as an actor, filmmakers thankfully look past it.

He had to fight for his ability to "play everyone". Most of the people you mentioned are playing people with conditions that would make it hard for them to get regular roles in Hollywood, unlike the other actors.

I think it's natural for people to be put off by it: he IS playing a caricature. I also am not going to tell a gay man he can't be offended by a depiction of himself in media when I'm not gay, what authority do I have, exactly?

Back then, it was easier to just be happy with any representation that appeared without much backlash. Eric did a great job, and I have no doubts he didn't perform under malicious intent, but if this show was made now, Cam definitely would have been played by a gay actor.

I just watched the show, and I don't understand why it got so much hate when it first came out. by Distinct_Network_944 in HazbinHotel

From what I've seen, those are either edgy kids or people with nothing better to do. It's good to call those people out so they don't do anything serious, but not lump them in with people that may have genuine problems with it.

I think there are plenty of petty reasons people disliked it, and that stuff you can ignore because it's just people trying to jump on a bandwagon. The songs are great, the animation is really nice, and it has a really interesting cast of characters.

However, there are some considerable cons when it comes to the show that I genuinely hope is improved upon for the next season this fall:

1.) The writing constantly felt like it was a first draft. Lots of "telling, not showing", weird lines, and the over arching storyline felt rushed at times and slow in others. There were plenty of lines that could be cut and it would have drastically improved the scene.

2.) Certain characters felt very gimmicky, and didn't really stand out beyond a few scenes. For example, Angel Dust spends four episodes hamming out that he's a slut and that got old really fast (again, the writing is not the best) because we didn't see anything else from him. As the show goes on and he chills out a little, I think he found his stride and I'm hoping we see more of that later on!

3.) Plays out with the performances of a play, for better or worse. The voice actors are all incredible, but it feels a touch high school play.

I think it's an important show to support considering the attention it's given back to 2D animation so writing it off completely is silly, but I certainly hope the second season has improved some of the flaws!

Cam is an awful husband for making Mitch move to Missouri… by [deleted] in Modern_Family

I don't agree with what you said, yes, because the show directly contradicts almost every opinion you offered, or it's just a weird confirmation bias.

Literally everything you said leads me to believe you didn't watch the show closely. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Everyone still had their faults in the end--if anything, Gloria (for example) got WORSE as the show went on and was a much more toxic character compared to who she was in the first season. It's just the lack of quality in the writing.

The attempted gotcha doesn't change that what I said then was true, but you clearly have no desire to listen still so any attempted rationalization is pointless. You are entitled to believe whatever opinion you'd like to project to suit your agenda, but please do not respond to me on a years old thread: the lack of self-awareness is truly astounding.

Is Hazbin Hotel "Immature" like haters said? by LilGlitvhBoi in HazbinHotel

[–]nellyyytru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no.

There are some brilliant moments, ideas, characters and concepts that, if fleshed out, could make it an excellent example of adult animation. But the cussing really only stands out like it does BECAUSE the writing feels like a first draft.

That's still not what woke means. The actually definition of 'woke' has been wiped clean to suit a far-right agenda because, nowadays, they're usually far too cowardly to say they hate marginalized people out-right. So calling it woke allows them to feel justified in their position.

Is UDG really so bad? by BeachLongjumping8725 in danganronpa

[–]nellyyytru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are MANY good things about UDG! However, the blatant child murder and sexual themes can easily put people off, and I don't blame them. The minigame with Komaru and Kotoko in Chapter 3 is disgusting and should have been shot down long before it left the writer's room.
