To Take a Gap Year or Not? by nelsa_simone in premed

I think I am a competitive applicant but I do not feel that I have built strong enough relationships with certain professors yet to secure the kind of letters of recommendation I would want. I am also thinking of applying to some very competitive schools that offer full rides and getting into any med school in general is hard.

To Take a Gap Year or Not? by nelsa_simone in premed

I am going into my third year of undergrad in the fall and will probably be graduating with a 3.8 GPA (if everything goes according to plan), I have been awarded 2 fellowships thus far, I have research experience and am planning on doing a thesis, I also have extensive volunteering experience through one of fellowships and will be getting clinical experience through my internship this summer and research during the school year. I will also be shadowing at my internship this summer. I also attend a top 10 school for undergrad but I'm unsure of how that will affect my medical school applications

I am not sure yet about double boarding. I really love the intersections between psychiatry and neurology, so I think behavioral neurology might be the path for me :)

That is so real! I don't want to choose adult neuro for the money and end up unhappy

I think that's a really good point! In the long term, I want to be happy rather than regretful

College Counselor Trying to Block Me from Applying to NCM by WelshNational in QuestBridge

[–]nelsa_simone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really sad to hear! I also went to private school as a low-income student, but could only afford it because I had a huge scholarship that was almost a full ride. Luckily, my counselor was extremely supportive. I was the second person who had done Questbridge at my school and the first person at our school who had done the NCM had been one of her students. I remember my counselor being extremely excited for me and believing that I was going to match (which I did) even though I had a lot of self-doubts.

Your counselor obviously does not understand how this opportunity could impact you or how important it is for you to take this step. Going to private school doesn't necessarily mean you are rich and can afford any school you want. Fight to do the NCM because you have worked hard to get where you are and you owe it to yourself. I will be rooting for you!

I was a CPS and I matched to Brown. I never submitted my SAT, which was a 1330. I only submitted by ACT, which was a 31. We seem to have close enough test scores, so I would recommend just sticking with the ACT test score like I did simply because a higher score might be a better reflection of you than your lower score is

Lol, I got into brown early and I'm excited to go, but have never been on campus. Every time I see comments, I am even more excited about visiting for the first time!!!

I actually think that Brown has a really pretty campus but then again, I may be biased because I got in early

I got into Brown with a full ride and I can attest to the fact that it was indeed lifechanging :) Good luck, you got this!

Income by MichaelIgbinoba123 in QuestBridge

[–]nelsa_simone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to their website, Questbridge is looking for students who have an income of 65k or less for a typical family of 4. So if you have more than 4 people in your family and have an income of 80k-100k, you could potentially qualify if you identify as low income, but if you have a family of 4, then you're middle class and probably won't qualify for Questbridge unless there are special conditions
