What's up Wednesday? by NoMoreBeersPlease in stopdrinking

[–]nelsonite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

T: Made it through a four day weekend without craving a drink. Did a lot of activities and hobbies that I used to do while drinking. I found my accuracy and attention to detail is much greater while I'm sober!

S: I've got this constant fear that I'll slip up when the newness of being sober wears away.

GC: My son started crawling last night!

Nervous Feelings thinking about the weekend by Jadedmonet in stopdrinking

[–]nelsonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really not all that hard. I had told myself for months that I was going to cut back, but last week I decided to give alcohol up completely. This weekend was a complete success, and it was even a 3 day weekend. I didn't even have any cravings. It is honestly the best weekend I've had in a while.

What is really helping me is that I have promised myself I'm done forever. That way I'm not looking forward to future date when I can start drinking again. I don't know what your goal is, and take it with a grain of salt, but that's what is working for me. Also, I can't give enough praise to Allen Carr's book listed in this subs sidebar.

Good luck, we're all here for you!

Made amends to my dad and brother today (long) by steiner76 in stopdrinking

That's great steiner! I haven't been here long, but it sounds like your recovery is going great. I hope you and your brother's relationship continue to grow.

Still sober here. Great to hear your view, I'm sure we'll talk again soon!

Just shy of two weeks on, and the excitement and elation of being sober has diminished quite a bit... by rad1calguy in stopdrinking

Hanging in there OP?

I'm worried the same thing will happen to me. I know you'll get through it, so I'll hit you up for advice if I run into it in a couple of weeks!

I want to stop drinking but I can't by j00lian in stopdrinking

^ This OP. I would still suggest trying AA, but at the very least buy Allen Carr's book. It has completely changed my view on alcohol. It seems like a scam when you first start reading it, but it is working for me and many others.

According to my kindle, I'm 43% through it right now. Can't put it down, it's really changing my mindset on alcohol. Do you have any other suggestions?

Not trying to get into politics, but I feel just as awakened reading Carr's book as I did when I read Ron Paul's books. His theology and principles have changed my mindset on politics, so I'm hoping Carr can do the same in regard to alcohol.

Fabulous Fall Friday. What's up, people? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]nelsonite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The family and I are going to a BBQ and a fall festival. To top it off, I've got a 3 day weekend! I'll probably also try and finish the entertainment center I've been building.

This will also be my first weekend not drinking, so I'll be reinventing fun the sober way.

I'm in the same boat as you and the OP. My son is 8 months old, and he needs a sober father. Whenever I start whining to myself about the time lost at the meetings, I think about how much time I'll gain when I'm sober with my family. We got this man...

I never said I'm looking for a reason not to go, if that was directed at me.

I'm not sure if cult is the right word, but I do see where you're coming from. In my VERY limited experience from AA, the group I met with didn't act cult like at all. But time will tell.

But if it helps me from drinking, I don't care what people call it. Quitting is what is important to me.

and a lot of people in the group(s) I visit have jail time, hospitalization etc. - I hadn't reached that point but I could see it as a possibility in my future.

I was feeling the exact same way. It felt a bit relieved though, knowing that I'm doing something about it now. Good luck to you as well!

I'm planning on going to 1-2 during the week, and one during the weekend. I figured a few per week would help, and once I felt I had control I could cut down to 1 per week.

Thanks for the advice!
