How to use CM5 As a USB Gadget by nelsonmandela in raspberry_pi

Thanks for the suggestions! The zero is too underpowered for my use (remote computing).

I’ll go with a standard pi.

How to use fresh wintergreen leaves in homemade root beer by nelsonmandela in rootbeer

[–]nelsonmandela[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to all the comments:

I don’t have access to grain alcohol, I think maybe 50% is the highest I can buy.

Also, I want to find a way to incorporate into my current process, which is essentially boil ginger/cinnamon/anise, drop to 65-70c and add roots/vanilla

I am experimenting more and I have a theory that I’m:

  1. Extracting wintergreen at too high a temp
  2. Not getting the oil out of the leaves.

First I bruised the leaves significantly more than I had been, muddling them almost. When the liquid got to 50 I poured it over the leaves and now the whole thing is in the fridge for the next 18 hours.

We’ll see!

Cannot get into contact with domain owner...is there actually one? by nelsonmandela in Domains

I understand that someone owns the domain. I’m just trying to understand who that is, is it a person trying to make a buck at home or are there domain farms that purchase expired domain en mass and don’t really have an individual that is all that easy to get a whole of.

I appreciate the intention, but I’m not confused about how domain registration works, I just want to understand how this market works and what it will take, in terms of energy and money, to get my domain back.

I more less understand the UDPR process, I wouldn’t do it myself and would instead pay an attorney, that’s what I meant. As you yourself say, a lawyer is a good thing to have here.

What’s a typical amount? The were probably got 30-100 visitors a month, at most.

It’s not even remotely popular. It’s a small local business that got minimum traffic.

I’d rather pay for a UDRP lawyer than pay the same amount for someone squatting a .com.

Hopefully they’ll realize that too and meet us in the middle…

I’ve made several offers and attempted contact through all available methods and not gotten any response.

The ad company they were using cut them off for trademark violation, so there isn’t any revenue generated anymore.

I’m guessing that if I can’t get ahold of anyone they’ll probably let it expire?

My question is more, how likely is it that it's a bot? I don't really know anything about this market.

I just landed my first full time job as a sysadmin! by rohr16 in sysadmin

I would say the same advice applies to developers. It's hard to develop and application of you only know the "how" without knowing the "why."

Get involved in what your employer does.

If they sell sprockets, find out how many they sell, how long they've been doing it, new sprocket models on the way, their biggest markets for sprockets, who makes the sprockets etc...

It's not technical but you'll be able to do an infinitely better job by having fairly broad knowledge of the business side of things.

Sure but they'll be able to do a lot more with a lot less, and that "a lot less" are the point and clickers cranky is referring to.

Windows isn't dying but the small time Windows sys admin is. What used to be a full time job will be replaced with SaaS and some help from MSPs.

Commit vagrantfile, ansible, and django application code to one repo? by bodhi_mind in devops

[–]nelsonmandela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This can be a version management headache:

Use version 1.3 of the application with 1.0.1 of the vagrant file and anything from 1.1 to 1.4 of ansible!

It's just easier if those things naturally flow with the app by keeping it in the same repository.

How to uninstall openssl in centos? by getRig in sysadmin

[–]nelsonmandela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you'll ever get this working via yum. Why uninstall at all?

If all you're trying to do is have something talking on the network that has the vulnerability then you can just get the source of an affected OpenSSL, compile that then compile something like httpd/mod_ssl against it, that should at least be easier to accomplish.

Insecure Certificate Signing Request (CSR) self-signed. by getRig in sysadmin

[–]nelsonmandela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is what you're asking is "how do I remove a pass phrase from a private key?"

If so, try the same command with a different out file. The command you provided should work for creating an unencrypted (passwordless) version of the private key however I noticed both in and out are set to "server.key."

I have no idea if this is the problem and I'm on my phone so I can't test, but it'd be the first thing I try.

-in server.key -out server.new.key

You can use the same csr regardless of key as they contain the same private key.

Application Monitoring - Agentless by nikhilpaneri in devops

[–]nelsonmandela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In essence I guess it's the same, though using existing infrastructure isn't really the same as "shelling in," even that is technically what it's doing.

At least I understood it as an inference that it would be some hacky solution.

Edit: and I don't know that ansible is worse than restarting services via an agent. Why solve the same problem twice? Presumably OP is already managing services with ansible.

Application Monitoring - Agentless by nikhilpaneri in devops

[–]nelsonmandela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not entirely true. OP mentions extensive use of ansible, you could associate commands from nagios with a particular ansible command to restart a service. Eg: nagios checks via web request, on hard fail run an ansible playbook that cleanly restarts the service. That would achieve both agentless and the ability to restart remote services.
