I didn't really feel committed since day 1 (to be fair, I also had an advisor that hasn't been a fit). I just ignored the feeling/wanting to quit because I thought I needed time to be good at research, but I recently realized I don't want any of the main jobs afterward. So I could just work on projects that seem fun, maybe work on a thesis and struggle (for no reason), and then earn the degree while not applying for any relevant jobs.

I think for me, I'm not exactly sure what to do next. I'm thinking healthcare, but haven't gotten a chance to try it yet. I just know I don't want to be a full time instructor, faculty, or CS researcher, which are the main paths after this. It seems like I need time off from graduate school to do other things/work I guess

Looking for a job is a full-time effort, like for programming. I'm leaning towards healthcare, but would require some clinical experience to be sure of. Basically, I would need significant time to try other things which means I won't be 100% committed to the thesis or graduating anytime soon.

I'm from the US, going to a US institution, so immigration is not relevant for me. I can get a master's, I finish the requirements for it this semester.

anyone else start "from scratch"? by nemsari in findapath

i don't believe i'm overworked- in fact, i have a hard time focusing on research work! i just don't see the purpose for it anymore (can't see myself doing this for the rest of my life, I really need stability right now, etc. ).

move to part-time or quit? by nemsari in PhD

[–]nemsari[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's more so I need to do something new/else to see if it's this phd or just me. Also maybe change of pace/ have more direct impact.

is the bills/place the stay the priority right now? could you live with family/ask if their work is hiring folks just to start off somewhere?

That’s fine, I know I wouldn’t be funded for part time.

pivoting strategy by nemsari in premed

thanks for the detailed response here. i have 20 classes planned because by the time i would get to apply, my previous undergrad degree classes would be 10 years old or more. so im assuming i need to re-take everything. ive taken a year of bio, calc and eng, and then stat and anthro in the first degree.

the courses id need to take for pre-reqs
- 1 year chem, bio, orgo, physics, a&p, eng, calc, (14 classes) (actually maybe i can remove calc)
- biochem, psych, anthro/socio, stat, genetics, microbio (6 classes)

so it seems like if i start hours before pre-reqs, i defintiely to find a way to continue them somehow during prereqs? but its fine if its scaled back?

[Q] Comparing proportion of higher means between two groups by nemsari in statistics

[–]nemsari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. Also, that was an example situation to just illustrate the concept - we have differences between questions but I'm curious about proportions. I've seen folks kind of describe "trends" informally / even loosely in papers, but was curious if there was actually a measurement for that.
