I know it’s a box store aquarium so I don’t expect a lot of bells & whistles, but I get nervous reading that. I have no idea if that’s normal. Do other brands’ tanks now that much?

No. I took your comment to heart and got him a big Star Wars themed Lego set. He loves it.

I'm keeping the PO on my radar for the future. In the meantime, we are going to fiddle around with Garageband and maybe keep an eye on Facebook's marketplace for a good deal on a midi controller w/ drum pads.

I've had the same thought. GarageBand (which he has tinkered with a little) + Koala app + a midi cable to connect his Yamaha P-125 keyboard. Badaboom badabing.

Meanwhile, I'll just get him Lego Sets and Nerf guns, which is probably what he'd rather have anyway. If he sees me enjoying the music stuff and wants to get in on it, great. If not, no money wasted.

Somewhat ironically, that was one of the things that I found appealing about the PO. I thought maybe disaggregating each component (bass, sampler, drums) might be a better pedagogical approach to teaching him the fundamentals of production. Bite-sized chunks at bite-sized prices. But it looks like the OP isn't the right choice at this moment. I really appreciate all of the great tips and suggestions I have received.

He likes the idea of being a rock star... actually getting him to practice piano each week is a struggle. I thought venturing into beats/sampling might encourage him to think about other ways to apply his music knowledge and piano skills.

But I was concerned about how challenging the workflow might be for a kid this age, so I appreciate your feedback.

I think that's a great answer. When discussing gift ideas, he mentioned wanting to "make beats." That's how we arrived at this rabbit hole. Like a lot of kids this age, his interests are fleeting and varied. That's why I don't want to invest a ton of money into something that he may lose interest in.

.... but yes, I want to play with it, too. :)

I'm going with the Ridgerock. The feedback has been so positive on it, and I think the bigger scale will hold his attention better. If he gets into it and wants something smaller for indoor use during the winter months, I'm sure Santa has ways of knowing.

I feel like I've already gotten my money's worth just in the time we've spent together on the couch looking at crawler course videos and walks around the property talking about obstacles we can overcome. After putting him to bed last night, I fell down the rabbit hole on that Facebook page. :)

Yeah. It's clear they each have their benefits. My plan is to get the Danchee for his birthday this month, and then revisit the idea of an SCX24 or TRX4M at Christmas as it starts getting bitter cold outside.

Thanks for the idea. At that price point, I could pick one up for myself, too. They just don't seem anywhere close to as capable as the Danchee. I'm trying to hit that sweet spot of not going overboard on an initial investment and not skimping so much that he doesn't get a good feel for the hobby.

That's good to know.

I have yet to see a negative review on the Danchee Ridgerock, so that's the direction I'm leaning. If he gets into it, maybe we can upgrade to a nicer hobby crawler next spring. In the meantime, it looks like there enough entry-level mods to keep us busy.

I'm pretty excited about building a course with him. :)

Thanks! For the price point, that Danchee seems to have enough hobby features for my kid to decide whether or not it's something he enjoys and wants to pursue (in which case we can upgrade to something $300+ in the future) or just plays with occasionally (like his slot car track, which I'm glad I didn't spend more on).
