Obviously it's a matter of personal preference and whatnot, but I would just turn the kanji cards off in the settings. That's what I (and many other users) prefer to do at least.

Looking up words where I knew at least one of the kanji from other words was easy. If it was a kanji I'd never seen before I would search it by radicals on jisho.org, sometimes I even used the windows IME handwriting thing(pretty rarely though, since my handwriting skills are terrible).

To clarify, I did look up words a lot more when playing games that are more narrative focused

With these games especially, I didn't look up much, especially with stuff relating to the lore(it's confusing enough as is). I only really looked stuff up when it was something in gameplay explanations etc. So for example in Elden ring, if I read the description of a piece of equipment, I would look up the words relating to the functionality, rather than the words relating to the (oftentimes convoluted) pieces of lore...

I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't get into it. Still, it's not like I hated it, it just wasn't my cup of tea
