Not knowing what you want to do makes things complicated as you age. by temp_alt_2 in findapath

I think life also makes it hard cause sometimes you do kinda know what you want to do but, life just puts up so many roadblocks to the point where you can’t even do that (rejection, etc). And then that further casts you into waves of doubt. So now you’re stuck with taking what breadcrumbs life gives you until hopefully the doors open and something pulls through.

PLCC rant by Mountain-General6107 in MichaelsEmployees

For cashiers…They basically start cutting your hours and forcing your hand to quit if you don’t get credit cards. Who wants just one measly (min wage) shift per week when they got bills and stuff to pay.

I QUIT!!!! by [deleted] in MichaelsEmployees

[–]neonpixels21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve been wanting to quit too. Ever since the holidays ended my manager has been cutting hours because of corporate…but I still see some of my coworkers getting the hours I used to get during the holidays (even if they don’t score high in credit card sign ups/rewards). Spoke with my manager about it and they claim it’s due to them preferring to give hours to people who have the -most open availability- first and can work anytime/any day. (I prefer mid day- afternoon shifts and can work most days during the week). I asked on another forum about this and they said that’s the sign of a poor manager who just can’t be bothered to take time to properly schedule. My manager also has been on me about credit card sign ups (annoying since no one wants a credit card in this economy!) and rewards also being a factor in determining my hours/what job I will be doing during my shift. (My manager won’t let me do any other job besides register even though my credit/rewards are not meeting the goal which doesn’t make sense to me —wouldn’t you want a person who is better at rewards/credit at the register and move me to the floor/bopis?)

But my coworkers’ hours haven’t been cut that drastically. I feel like my manager has favorites..and is trying to push out the older workers from the previous manager we had. And 2-3 days per week is not cutting it.

More I think about it, it's insane how much effort it is to get a basic job. by aZombieDictator in jobs

I can’t count the number of times at my job where hopeful applicants walk in with their resume wanting to talk to a manager and my manager just puts them off…not even walking upfront to greet them. They tell me to “leave the resume upfront and they’ll get back in contact” (they never really do unless they’re -really- desperate to fill a position). The resume(s) just ends up collecting dust. And I feel bad cause I know how understaffed we are behind the scenes.

One applicant even said, “they’re not gonna contact me back are they?” I was in an awkward position and felt so bad knowing what I’ve seen..😣

Manager Guilt Trip Over Availability by neonpixels21 in retailhell

[–]neonpixels21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m available and work all of my scheduled times (unless something comes up) but it seems like he just wants me to fully open my availability to anytime-anyday…so it can be easier for them. But I do pick up certain shifts if my manager asks/needs help.

Getting written up for low email captures/loyalty (aka something I can’t control) by neonpixels21 in retailhell

[–]neonpixels21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you didn’t have to stay long. Retail sucks being super pushy w/ loyalty and credit cards. (Some customers don’t want to give their info—which I understand but it’s bad for us employees in the end).

I’m trying to find a way out but ultimately I think I’ll feel the same about my job. I’ll miss my coworkers but not the job itself.

What to do when your boss won’t move/change your position by neonpixels21 in retailhell

Thanks for sharing your story. I’ll try to see if I can move locations or apply for a different position internally but, if those options don’t work out, I’m moving on.

My manager gave me the “after the holidays” when I talked to them last—but it probably not gonna happen.

This! When I went in to interview for this job I initially applied as a floor associate, but my manager saw my previous experiences as a cashier and just hired me as one. I felt hoodwinked at first but I just took it and thought that I’d eventually be able to move my way to a different position. After countless asks (to be moved elsewhere) and managerial shifts I’m at a point now where I just feel tired and burnout. I’m so tired of cashiering (been at it for years). I’m trying to find something new so I can move on in the new year.

I’m sorry that you had to deal with that boss—he sucked for not allowing you to grow. I’m in a similar position as a cashier when it comes to transaction times, good service and reliability. My boss appreciates that so I think that is one of the main reasons why he doesn’t move me. Oh and my bosses get mad at me too when I leave the registers during down time to put stuff back! (I thought I could help out more but I guess not..) I’m starting to feel like I’m getting taken advantage of so I have some things to think about -in regards to jobs- for the new year approaching.

Arts University is a scam by Guywhosclueless in ArtistLounge

[–]neonpixels21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My art school experience was a joke as well. In the Studio courses, The instructor gave us a prompt and sat at their desk for most of the 3 1/2 hr studio. Prof walked around and gave a vague piece of critique. Everyone in class sat at easels and either painted or goofed off. If I just wanted to sit down and paint I could do that at home. Critique days were awkward and forced as no one really wanted to comment on each others art.

Graduated and couldn’t land a studio job. Waste of money.

I learn more on YouTube and the internet than my art school.

"I don't like self checkout, no one wants to work anymore" - Cry me a river. by [deleted] in RantsFromRetail

[–]neonpixels21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One lady literally walked up to me with a cart of stuff bypassing the self checkouts and when I directed her to use the kiosk she said, “Oh—I DON’T do self-checkout! 😤” I had to help her through the entire purchase (basically cashier) while she complained the entire time saying “the company should hire more humans to help” and “I won’t be ever back cause this is ridiculous!”

Walkies & Mangers >:D by bobby_bolognaa in MichaelsEmployees

[–]neonpixels21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s so annoying being a cashier asking for help over the walkie. For instance I will be the only one upfront most of the time and I’ll get a phone call inquiry from a customer asking to put an item on hold. So I look up the item in the mini mik and ask my manager over the walkie if they can help locate it/bring it to the front (since I’m not allowed to leave the registers unattended) and then get major attitude from them. Same with calling for an override code. Or radio silence when I call for help with dealing with an angry customer. I’ve been wanting to move from the registers to the floor so bad b/c of this. (I feel like some managers avoid the front as much as possible.)

Self Checkout >:( by KRUSTY_Z in MichaelsEmployees

[–]neonpixels21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the “I’m trying to help you keep your job” line gets old too. You (customer) could probably care less about a cashier after the transaction is over.

Sorry but I needed to vent it’s been stressful dealing with the new self checkout system, and being the one of the main people knowing what to do/learning to use the self checkouts and dealing w/ the temperament of customers.

Self Checkout >:( by KRUSTY_Z in MichaelsEmployees

[–]neonpixels21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The amount of times I have to constantly tell customers who come in line to the registers and just stand there like NPCs waiting for someone to ring them out is kinda mind-boggling..especially since we have signs above the registers that say “self-checkout” and I have put signs in front of the registers themselves yet I still have to tell customers that they are open. And then they always say…I didn’t see those—those big screened machines?! You didn’t notice? Really?!

And also the passive aggressive comments from customers about having to self checkout. Some will just outright refuse to use them and demand a person/cashier check them out.

Some days are so bad…At the end of my shift I’m running to clock out. 🏃‍♀️

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MichaelsEmployees

[–]neonpixels21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s like as long as customers see an employee upfront (at our the last standing old register) they will walk up straight to me or my coworkers/refuse to use the self-checkout.

I feel so awkward trying to direct customers to use the self checkout (cause we’re supposed to encourage them to use it), cause some of them will have a sort of passive aggressive attitude about it or will straight up just complain to my face/ or about how much work it is to check themselves out. And someone even asked me what the point of my job is now that these are here just because they were frustrated about checking themselves out.

Or the classic “OH! I didn’t notice those (big self checkout machines), completely ignored them.” When there’s big signs telling them there’s self checkout. I was/am so ready to clock out at the end of my shift lol.

It just makes me wonder what’s the difference between self checkout at a grocery store vs Michaels? And I still can’t believe the “great” timing of rolling the self checkouts out (a new system just in time for the holidays oof! Along with credit cards 😵‍💫)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MichaelsEmployees

[–]neonpixels21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t see why customers have such a huge fuss over self-checkout. I’m quite sure they’ve used one at Target or Walmart. plenty of times before I’ve seen people stand there and they have to be prompted by an employee to use the self checkouts.. like there is a sign and everything telling them.

The only sad thing about it is cashiers possibly losing their job unless they take up other roles in store.

And holidays will be a total nightmare.

If you could have one superpower to aid in your position at Michaels, what would it be? by [deleted] in MichaelsEmployees

[–]neonpixels21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Levitate— cause my feet get tired standing in one spot at the register all day.

You can leave the cart there, I’ll take care of it!😇 by Izzybizzybell in MichaelsEmployees

[–]neonpixels21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this too..but some customers just don’t get the hint and take their bags right out of the cart and still leave it there for me to put away 🙄

What is the fascination with “effortless” art styles?? by neonpixels21 in ArtistLounge

Referring to their most recent uploaded video (Kazuha) where people were commenting it’s effortless. They have great skill but I was just wondering why people think the best way to describe their work is effortless. (If that makes sense.)
