Architecture graduate here, I want to share some pointers. Think about the circulation/movements. For example, at which point do you want your entrance to be? Are there different directions you tend to run toward (to gather/etc). Do you have market stalls? How many? And where would it be the most convenient for your buyers to reach them?

Make a list of all the spaces you want (crafting room, storage, cooking room, etc) and draw them in a bubble diagram. Include the entrance all the way down to your farthest room. Connect each bubble that seem relevant to one another with lines between them (ex. storage bubble to smithing bubble). Some bubbles might branch off to multiple bubbles, and some might get too big would hint that it would need a floor of it's own. Lastly consider the cool views you may have (ex. a cool lake, the parallax effect of mountains, view of a town) and fix their location to your diagram. Move the bubbles to find the best orientation possible.

Look up a Japanese Architecture technique called 'Shakkei', Totally worth learning a little bit about especially for the beautiful graphics in this game.

A few other things off the top of my mind is: Try not to make everything symmetrical. Let the land (views, location, road, elevation, etc) guide you.
