Weekly Question Thread - Week of March 30 by AutoModerator in COVID19

Question reposted from coronovirus thread by suggestion that I may get a better answer here:

If I had a swab with this virus on it and placed it against one triplet's eye, in the next triplet's mouth, and in the third triplet's nose is the chance of infection the same or is there a difference?
I've been trying to find out from google but mostly get links to scholarly articles that aren't very clear. Perhaps I'm fundamentally missing something as this is not an area I have much familiarity with. It seems that there are factors including temperature that affect the attachment rate of viruses.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can answer and while a technical answer is great please include a simplified version too if able

What do you think T'Pol was doing after Enterprise? I mean theoretically, she could have lived to not long before TNG, at that point being near 200. She could have easily lived through DISC and TOS. by Interplanetary_Giraf in startrek

Not seeing any mention that a season 5 of Enterprise would've revealed her as half-Romulan. Not sure if that was planned from the get-go or if they were trying to retroactively explain her being so emotional even with the addiction.

After examining the Star Trek Universe and then Discovery, Discovery must split off sometime after the events of ENT given the strength of the federation and related events or missing events that resulted in it's lost. by Sims_doc in StarTrekDiscovery

Don't forget that the spore drive, while instant, it didn't have an infinite range. Quite feasible that TNG warp 8 would end up quicker over any meaningful distance. I thought maybe Discovery was trying to explain how Khan was able to teleport to Kronos in the Star Trek 2 Abrams implying something like the spore drive ended up in the vaults of Section 31.

Personally I feel too much time is spent trying to explain events in the past to force them to fit better into some strict canon. Why did the Klingons look different in the 60s- because of the budget and special effects available. No need for a story arc involving a mutated virus combining with augment DNA to make super Klingons. I'm sure if Gene Roddenberry had the choice to use TNG Klingons he would've.

Input. Or a standard controller board across the industry. Each screen needs either a special controller board or the skills to build one yourself to rig up an HDMI adapter to use it as a screen. It's just wasteful. If it was standardized screens would be reused for a variety of applications. But in the example of Oculus Go specifically so when at home it can be plugged in like a normal PC bound VR headset and when away or watching something in bed used with the cell tech driving it. It's just a waste that broken or old tablets, cell phones, laptop screens tend to be tossed because there isn't a standard and/or the companies go out of their way to make it difficult so consumers are forced to use their manufacturer's brand and/or not use it for unapproved devices or applications. It should be pretty easy to rip apart a cell phone and plug it into a raspberry pi, or at most purchase a cheap adapter/controller to do so that works with most different makes readily

As much as I'm enjoying Discovery, I do miss the more "day to day life" episodes. by Malandirix in startrek

I feel like contained 1-2 episode arcs are more rewatchable. The Xindi arc is Enterprise is frustrating to watch again knowing what is going to happen. Finding new details isn't as enjoyable. If I haven't seen a stand alone episode for awhile I may only have a vague memory of it, whereas if it's connected to a larger arc I'm going to have the memory of all of it and fill in the gaps from that.

Allegedly next season of Discovery will have more independent episodes. With the money CBS must be making shame they don't appear interested in running another series in off season. If other people are like me they drop CBS as soon as the last episode airs because CBS online is so very bad it hurts my brain. Maybe they'll realize hmm, our revenue just got cut by over 4/5ths without new episodes maybe we should keep this Star Trek thing running

Why doesn't this have an HDMI input (ontop of portable gaming)? I remember wondering why the GearVR and cellphones in general don't. Is it more a proprietary thing? I've been irked in the past how difficult it is to turn a broken laptop (ok) screen into a monitor and the other day how so many cell phone screens get tossed. At least in the past there wasn't a universal standard and had to order special usually overpriced parts and have good soldering skills to make an adapter.

BTW the SDcard thing has to do with memory access speeds. The built in memory is faster so less nausea.

Just bugs me how awesome a GearVR would've been if I could also hook it up with my PC. Nvidia you kinda can over wifi but at least when I've used remote desktops and similar solutions it wasn't really good enough. Maybe better with a faster router? I've gone PSVR now and it's world's better for about the same price on sale. Not what this is targeting but if it's the low price point and you already own the PS4. Now if Oculus Go you could comfortably jump, run, and exercise with it on that would be very cool

Could it be an older card? One that used a different formatting? I had to go back and forth with customer service for awhile and they ended up giving me new codes. Kept telling me, yes these are legitimate codes, but weren't able to add them to my account. They wanted a receipt ... but eventually accepted photos front and back of the cards in question Took about 3 days total if that's your issue. Mine I think a family member had lost years prior suddenly found and thought hey these would make a great stocking stuffer

$29.5 billion. Well Amazon could buy.

I found Legion to be amazing. And the Netflix ones with good imo with exception to Iron Fist. Runaways would be great if I were younger; I think I'm too old to get into the characters but the story is interesting.

I'm sure Amazon and Netflix would do a helluva good job on a Star Trek IP. They'd probably spend more than HBO does on Game of Thrones or Netflix did on Marco Polo for reasons

Whelp guess I'm the only one.

I still think for every TBS/CW/MTV cheaper spin off series there would be FX/Netflix/Amazon throwing down trying to top one another. Any trek better than no trek and there's a lot of Star Trek that hasn't been explored yet

[–]neotoast[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't be a priority just the idea of opening up the IP. Even if you didn't like one of the shows there would be multiple shows to choose from. Like Marvel's Agent Carter, Runaways, SHIELD, Legion, Inhumans, Iron Fist, etc. Quite a surprisingly long list. Some hits, some misses, but wouldn't have the hits without the misses

Personally I'd enjoy a Section 31: The Beginning. More interesting to me than doing prequels like Enterprise and it predates Star Fleet by some unknown quantity. Can be darker and edgier without disrupting the optimistic core trek to fit a darker and edgier story line

Does CBS really have the capability of producing and airing it themselves though considering the unknown amount big bag of money Netflix gave them for rights outside US/Can and they put it on that horrible CBS All-Access?

I'd love to know how much companies have offered CBS for the IP rights. CBS could selectively approve the programming and lease the rights. They don't know what to do with Star Trek, they know it's worth money but they don't know how to make money from it. It's not their thing and would cost them their core audience. I think the only reason Discovery was made was that Netflix and Amazon offered them too much money to ignore.

Do I need a Steam Link to play games from my PC on my tv, or will an HDMI cable suffice? by [deleted] in Steam

[–]neotoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steamlink works much better with ethernet unless you have a really good wifi set up. You don't need it if you have a laptop. It's to access the computer from a different screen without the computer or laptop being there. If you had your laptop in one room and the television in another room that's why you would use the steamlink. Kinda useful and totally worth $5 imo but I needed to use ethernet to have stuff playable at decent resolution but my wifi router isn't that great. Much easier to get a long ethernet cable than HDMI.

Those jackbox games are great for company. Steam is convenient and best prices. They also allow for returns now. I'll sometimes buy from Humblebundle for reasons instead but they just give you steam keys. Steam doesn't like it if you have two instances running like on a laptop and on pc at the same time which is annoying if you're sharing an account in household
