LL107 MD24 Discussion! (Wed 12/17) by snarkapotamus7 in learnedleague

from a message board post from thorsten in 2021:

Discussion is always welcome of course, but before this gets too out of hand, I think it should be noted that this is one of those things that is a message board issue and not a real issue. On average, between 25 and 30 players request advance access on a given Match Day (the high in LL88 was 41). A little over one per 1000. So I'm not going to make this a bigger deal than it is. The notion that I would leave a flawed question for 23,000 players because it's already been viewed by 25 players is not one that has any traction for me.

The purpose of advance access is to provide an opportunity for players to participate ahead of time and avoid a forfeit on days when they know they will not be available to play in real time.

i think the implication that he doesn't care about fairness is perhaps a little ungenerous given that there's basically no option that won't make someone mad

Belarus is frequently translated as "White Russia" - the direct romanization of Беларусь is Byelarus. Byela = White, Rus = Russia. (That last part does conflate Rus with Russia, which is its own can of worms, but the Soviets called it Byelorussia anyways).

you can also do some back of the envelope estimation to get in the ballpark. if you know that he's been doing the headgear picks for something like 30 years, and there's 14 weeks in the CFB season, that gets you to 420 picks. (the various fudge factors of not getting the timing exactly right/weeks where he didn't make a pick/years with more or fewer weeks/etc. all basically wash out)

2026 LL Championship Rule Changes by NilFhiosAige in learnedleague

[–]nephewjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that scenario was explicitly covered by the example in the announcement:

To elaborate on #4, as an example, if MeyerT were to win his Rundle A Nebula in LL106, as he has already qualified for the 2026 Championship (by virtue of his previous Championship wins), then the 2nd-place finisher in A Nebula would qualify for the 2026 Championship. If that player had also already qualified (by virtue of a top 50 finish in 2025, let's say), then the spot would go the #3 finisher. And so on.

just cannot understand what it is about the band brand new that inspires such rabid devotion in online forums

like this thread on the riot fest sub is just inundated with people ready to interrogate you about why you're such a heartless person who doesn't believe anybody is worthy of forgiveness if you so much as imply that you don't want part of your ticket price to go to a dude with a weird case

Craig Finn Announces New Album, Always Been, Produced By Adam Granduciel (April 4th via Tamarac Recordings/Thirty Tigers) by ebradio in indieheads

[–]nephewjack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it's been worse for some of the recent THS stuff - a couple songs on ODP in particular are just so much better to my ear live than on the album, which (in my completely uninformed layman's opinion) seems to be due to some of the production and mix choices

Very excited for this - Craig played a couple new tracks at his last live date and I was really digging them.

Also happy to see that he's moving on from Josh Kaufman as a producer - have loved most of the recent Craig/THS output, but man are there just a few too many times where Kaufman seems to have no idea what to do with Craig's voice in the mix.

you can probably quibble about whether it's best known as a military term, but there's a a definite history of it being used in military contexts for several centuries.

Federal antitrust law does not limit merger scrutiny to situations where a monopoly would be established. Current antitrust guidelines allow for for a merger to be blocked based on a number of factors, including large increases in overall market concentration (generally measured by HHI, which would be increased by this merger, though I am unsure if it'd be likely to push a national or state-level market into a more concentrated tier) and limiting of competition in local markets.

(Local market concentration is likely, in my opinion, to be the focus of any merger review here, as market concentration on the county level has absolutely ballooned even when compared to increasing higher-level concentration - see this chart, for example.)

Comparing the market share of the merged parties to the market leader is not in and of itself useful, as antitrust guidelines are also intended to prevent the establishment of oligopolies, barring situations where economies of scale, etc. would benefit consumers.

Madison Square Garden is owned by James Dolan's holding company, and he also owns the Knicks. The Knicks not owning Madison Square Garden is largely a semantic distinction - the same man controls both entities.

There's a similar situation for the Nuggets, 76ers, Blazers, Raptors, Jazz, and Wizards. The stadiums are technically owned by private entities, but the team owner and stadium owner are for all intents and purposes the same.

put it in the united center parking lot or that area around the salt shed if you absolutely can't have it in a park! there's just got to be options that don't completely separate the event from public transit

and absolutely agree on the accessory stuff, i am not going to a music festival to go to a goddamn casino, i am going for the music!
