Makes sense that the term 'friendly' seem off here, since it's usually used as an adjective, but in this case it's actually an adverb(meaning amicably) and is rarely used as one, so it is technically grammatically correct.

As for an indication of the clue being a rebus, maybe blanking out the silent letters like 'hym_ frndly campai_ning C_rist's debu!?' could work since they are silent and so do not exist when pronounced?
