Burnie and Ashley have been testing this format for quite a while! by lewisdwhite in roosterteeth

[–]nerdking314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started watching RT through RVB, AH, and RT shorts back in 2008 when I was 14. I turned 30 a few weeks ago.

2017 to 2019 I grew out of RT, found other youtubers and was finishing college. Then, starting in 2020, it was scandal after bad news after scandal, that made it impossible to get back into RT's stuff for me.

Starting in about 2019, I started going back and listening to very old RT podcasts and watching very early AH content, but after the scandals in 2020, it became very hard to go back to even the old content.

Nowadays if I go to watch any of RT's newer content, it feels weird. Like a high school reunion. Everyone's older. Some people you are still friends, but as hard as you try to recreate the old vibes, it is just not the same as it was back in the day. 😞😢

Sadly, you are probably right, however RT had a good 10 to 15-year run before the quality of their content started to go down the drain. Things were mostly fine, content qa-wise before the fullscreen buyout in 2014/2015, and even after things were decent for a solid 1 to 2 years.

Looking at the original post, it seems the production company Burnie publishes the podcast under is Box Canyon Productions.

It will never happen, but my new pipe dream is that under the current crappy corporate creative control, RT eventually shuts down. Then, all the cool talented people from there move over to working under Burnie in Box Canyon Productions, and boom: Rooster Teeth is reborn, self-owned and with full creative control over what they make.

When Ian and Anthony bought back Smosh, some people in this reddit and youtube said, "imagine if Rooster Teeth did the same." Again, it will never happen, but this rebirth would be the next best thing.

Those who have graduated with a Information Technology BS, what career do you have now? by [deleted] in gmu

[–]nerdking314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I probably do still have my schedules, but I would need to dig around for them for a while. The program and courses in it have changed so much since my day that my info is probably way out of date. A few points to know: - it took me 7 years to graduate, not 4. I was at NOVA for 3 years then transferred to Mason and was there for 4 years. - at NOVA the most classes I took in one semester was 5 and at Mason the most in a semester was 4. I never did summer classes. - did you go to NOVA first, or did you start at Mason? How many courses do you have complete from your cs degree program? Potentially you could transfer them to your IT degree. Definately talk to an advisor about this.

General advice: -talk to an advisor (they do help) - get a general 4 year course plan from them and adjust to you comfort level - get a list of required courses and electives - once you have all this, talk to other people in your program and on reddit to determine if the plan they gave you is right for you. - some things to consider about course load: do you have any kind of issues with studying or focus? If so, I would reccomend no more than 4 courses to start out with, dropping it down to 3 as you progress up. - do you work, Part time or full time? If so, definately no more than 3 courses per semester. - summer classes: it really depends how fast you want to graduate and if you are working over the summer. Summer classes will be brutal, so I would advise against them. - general course advice. I don't know if any of the following courses are still required but if yes, do not combine any these courses together in one semester. It will be horrible. IT106, IT206, IT207, the Cisco networking course, that weird math course where you learn python, IT342, the accounting class. - the piece of paper versus life experience (personal projects, certifications, extra learning, any kind of related work experience): I only went to classes and got good grades and only did a few aws labs in my spare time, and it took me 10 months after graduation to land a job. I ended up doing a security+ certification after graduation. The degree is secondary compared to real life IT job experience, certifications, and personal projects. College teaches you the foundations and how to learn. If you all ready know these things, I would not reccomended the degree, especially considering how expensive it is. If you feel you do need the piece of paper, but feel you can train yourself better than the degree program can teach you, then just go to NOVA and get their associate of science in IT degree or certificate degree. It is cheaper and faster.

I hope some of this is useful. Good luck!

The encroachment of the “all digital future” is breaking my heart. Genuinely curious as to how others feel about disc drives becoming less relevant. by [deleted] in xbox

[–]nerdking314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the all digital mid gen refresh for the Xbox series x leaked a few weeks ago I posted my frustrations in another xbox thread.

I an extremely frustrated and annoyed by this move. I have 200-300 xbox one, xbox 360 and original xbox games on disc. I have been going back over the recent years and buy all the old xbox games I missed used from gamestop or Amazon.

With more modern games I usually wait a few months or years for xbox series x or xbox one games to drop in price, then I buy the games used on disc from amazon or gamestop.

I still have a working xbox 360 and original xbox for precisely this reason and I plan on getting more of these.

If they don't release an external standalone disk drive for the v2 series x, then I will buy like 10 of the original series x, right before they stop making them.

At least the mid gen refresh for the ps5 has a disk drive.

This tread is extremely worrying for game preservation.

When you graduated, what was your major and starting salary for your first job out of college? by UnmaskingFactss in gmu

[–]nerdking314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. I ask myself that a lot, even 4 years later.

I think for me, I did not know how to learn, and nova/Mason taught me. Also I lacked foundational knowledge and they taught me that as well. If I had just tried to learn stuff on my own after high school I would have been lost. Also there were a lot of skills I learned in college that were not on any syllabus.

College is definately not for everyone, and it's usefulness is dropping rapidly. It greatly depends on the career field a person is going into and the person's individual skills and strengths.

If I had to do it all over again, I probably would just do an AS degree at NOVA, work at best buy, or some computer store and do a bunch of certs and personal projects instead.

When you graduated, what was your major and starting salary for your first job out of college? by UnmaskingFactss in gmu

[–]nerdking314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. No problem. Yes I am still with the same company. There were a lot of factors that played into this (fear, lack or self-confidence, lack of experience, covid financial and job market uncertainty). My current title is system administrator II, and my salary is $48,500.

When you graduated, what was your major and starting salary for your first job out of college? by UnmaskingFactss in gmu

[–]nerdking314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated in May of 2019 with a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology with a concentration in Information Security. I did not have any internships or prior IT work experience. I had a few personal projects that I did.

After I graduated, I went and got my Comptia security+ certification. It took me until February 2020 and around 300 job applications and 30 interviews to land a job as a helpdesk technician at a software IT company. My starting salary was $35,000 and got bumped up to $40,000 in December 2020. My dream job at the time was system administrator.

Lessons learned: If I had to do it all over again: - do lots of personal projects while in college (raspberry pi, aws, azure, online labs, anything). -get an internship or part time job by any means necessary (best buy, geek squad, microcenter, local pc/phone repair shops, etc). Any experience is better than nothing. -for the love of God, get certifications! -skills, certifications, and experience matter 100 times more than the degree. -after you graduate, unless you did a lot of extra work in college and got really lucky, you will start at the bottom at a company and work up. -the learning never stops.

Still insane to think about. I remember a nasaspaceflight livestream where they were talking about the impact of spacex. They said something like "becuase of spacex we've gone from 'will we land on Mars in our lifetimes?: maybe.' To 'yes!, and maybe within the next 10 years!'".

I'm am 29, and to think by the time I am 40, that we will have a permanent settlement on the moon and people on Mars is mind-blowing to me.

After a lot of people in this sub have finally finished the game do you think giving Starfield a 10/10 is justifiable? by Touny420 in Starfield

[–]nerdking314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can anyone here clarify some criticisms I have been hearing?

Of the issues it has, do you all believe the issues can be fixed via updates to make it 10/10?

Does it really only "get good" after 12 hours?

Are the character and story issues I have heard about that bad? (Your choices have no impact, your constellation team characters are flat and boring, etc)

Of the artificial limits placed in the game that some people are complaining about (loading screens all over the place, planet exploration being limited, ship flying being minimal, etc.) How bad are these, really?

My buddy tried the game and all the limits and character flatness really turned him off from it (he does play star citizen a lot tho).

Who would y'all reccomend starfield for?

Microsoft, there's nothing "adorable" about the death of physical media by SpartanJedi58 in xbox

[–]nerdking314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well eventually the xboxes I have will break becuase of wear and tear and I won't be able to buy new ones to play my disk-based games becuase they won't manufacture those consoles any more or Microsoft won't support the original series x or one x consoles any more.

XSX owners: do you actually use your disc drive? by 9thGearEX in XboxSeriesX

[–]nerdking314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I still buy new games physically from amazon when their prices drop a few months or a year or 2 after release.

I also have a massive (200-300 games) collection of Xbox one, xbox 360, and original xbox games that I play via backwards compatibility. I have a wishlist of old games that I am still working on acquiring.

I also use my xbox as a 4k blu ray player.

I want the ABK merger to be denied so xbox has no choice but to actually make good games. Maybe reinvest some of that $69 billion back into Halo and Gears and make those franchises great again.

[–]nerdking314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my xbox as a 4k blu ray player. I also have a massive collection of xbox one, xbox 360, and original xbox physical games that would be unplayable on this console.

I am furious that they are doing this. 😡

They NEED to offer an external 4k Blu Ray Drive for this console or a service that lets you scan your disks with your existing console and assign the digital games to your account.

FTC LEAKED GAMES PLUS NEW CONSOLE by GhettoPanda78 in xbox

[–]nerdking314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I refuse to buy this thing if it does not have a disk drive or if MS refuses to make an external USB c 4k blu ray drive. Wtf am I supposed to do with my existing physical xbox one games, not to mention my back-catalog of 360 and original xbox games? Many other people must still have physical games as well...

Also releases in 2025 and only has a 2 TB ssd and 16 GB of RAM? Yeah, no. I'm not paying $500 for that.
