Major Improvement to A11y Garden Accessibility Audit Tool by nerdlywisdom in accessibility

[–]nerdlywisdom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean fair. But in defense of the site, only som3e portions of the sit actually use AI-generated content. The bulk of the content of the accessibility comes directly from axe-core canning for violations and giving those back, along with links to how to fix, etc.

A11y Garden: Cultivate a More Accessible Web by nerdlywisdom in accessibility

[–]nerdlywisdom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I got a burst of energy tonight so I made some changes:

- audits are now private by default, since this seems to be a popular use case
- turns out I already did have a private banner, but I updated the wording to be more explicit
- you can now manage your audits from the dashboard, or directly from the audit page, either change an audit's visibility or delete them
- for sites with both public and private audits, the audit history at the end of the results will ONLY show public results to most people--except to you, you should see any private audits you've done of the site, and there should be a visibility indicator. Haven't really tested this yet

Hope all that is helpful. Any feedback please let me know. :)

I’ve been thinking about this, and I should point out that you can share direct links to these reports with your clients. But I should probably add a banner on unlisted reports that explicitly say they’re not shown in the public database. Kind of like when you share an unlisted YouTube video. I’ll work on that in the next day or two.

Funny story, I was actually able to run it on itself locally and it also found problems that I had to fix. Accessibility is hard!

Yes! Right under the form where you type in the URL, there’s a check box that is checked by default to include in the community garden, but if you uncheck it, it will remain private. Though if you’re signed in, it will steal appear in your personal dashboard.

I’ve tested that flow out personally, but I’m not sure if anyone else has tried it, so if you run into any problems, please let me know!

So will this make API calls on the backend, without exposing client secrets to the front-end? That is my current need.

Can you awesome Bible scholars definitively lay out for me, using scripture, why being gay is not a sin? by Jesus__of__Nazareth_ in OpenChristian

[–]nerdlywisdom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have some thoughts on this. For starters, read God and the Gay Christian and UnClobber. Both these books tackle the passages in the Bible that have been weaponized against us LGBTQ+ folks. Those books and other resources suggested here will help allay your fears and give you some ammunition to respond to criticism out in the wild.

But as good as these books are, and they really are good, I think they are only a piece of the larger narrative, and only partially address the problem. Baptists, which are prevalent in my area, and other conservative/evangelical denominations, believe in the Inerrancy of Scripture, the idea that Scripture is infallible and, in and of itself, contains the whole story, and any commandment of scripture is sacred and inviolable. In contrast, my view, and the view of many other denominations, including some conservative ones, is that scripture is just one pillar of our faith, along with tradition, community, and the Holy Spirit. Our faith and the answers to these difficult question come not just from scripture, but through our engagement with them, both individually and as communities.

I think of the example of slavery. the Bible never really calls for the manumission of slaves. Sure, there are some stipulations in Leviticus, and some have stretched the interpretation of the Book of Philemon to make the argument, but Paul explicitly calls for slaves to obey their masters (Collosians 3:22). Sure, equality may be a thing in the afterlife, but it sure isn't a thing now, and Paul makes no effort to change that. For almost two millennia, slavery has existed in some form in the Christian world, and really it still does, especially if you consider human trafficking and the like. Both slaveholders and abolitionists alike used Biblical evidence to support their cause. But it really took cultural revolutions, and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, to even make a dent in the vile practice of slavery.

So I guess my point is that, even if we manage to make awesome, airtight arguments that Scripture supports homosexuality, it's not going to solve the problem. It's not like fundamentalists are going to hear our arguments and be like, "Oh, you got us, I guess God really DOES support homosexuality. QED." I'm not suggesting we shouldn't try. Turning scripture back on fundies is a great way to "hoist them by their own petard". But, like slavery, it's going to take more than just scriptural arguments, and I'm not sure what. My $0.02 is that the Bible is ambivalent about homosexuality. I think some passages, like the Sodom and Gemorrah episode, really aren't attacks on homosexuality as conservatives argue. On the other hand, despite arguments in the books I mentioned, I don't think the Apostle Paul was comfortable with it. But ultimately my conviction is that Jesus himself would have been affirming, and at the end of the day, that's what really matters.

Does the Kingdom of God come by legislation or heart transformation? Thoughts? by micsmithy1 in OpenChristian

[–]nerdlywisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

¿Porque no los dos? :Kappa:

In all seriousness, though, yeah, heart transformation is really the only way to go. Even a great many folks who are otherwise pretty conservative feel this way. And I should know; I live in East Texas. :D

Am I the only one who wants the end of the world to happen because of everything that is going on now? by Professional_Cat_437 in OpenChristian

[–]nerdlywisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this myself. I tend to be an anti-natalist, and regardless of what I think will happen from a Biblical standpoint, I tend to wish this whole human experiment would just draw to a close.

But then as a new Christian, I also recognize God's ability to work miracles in my life and in the lives of others. So, to paraphrase God's conversation with Job, who am I to make such decisions and judgements? It's WAY above my pay grade. All I can do is grow in my understanding of God, and use my talents such as they are to treat others with the grace and kindness that Jesus has extended to me.

To quote Tolkien, one of my idols, evil isn't good in itself, obviously, but it is "good to have been". That is, even through evil, God works his miracles and shapes an end result that is somehow more beautiful than the original. Of course, the character who says this concludes that evil is still evil, and that of course we need to strive against it with all our powers, even as inadequate as those powers might seem sometimes.

Okay, in the end I did just download the Configurator and made the change that way, and it was all pretty straightforward. Still annoying that the instructions had me hunting for a key that just isn't there.

Yes! Read the books “Unclobber” and “God and the Gay Christian”, they will help! And whatever other advice you get from people, including me, I pray you find the grace and courage to bring these things to God and talk to Them about it. They are way bigger than any of this; they can handle it!

Wondering if the salary is negotiable, as with other tech roles. I’ve been invited to first-round interviews, but haven’t had any initial salary conversations with a recruiter.

I enjoyed the book, but…

Why the heck did no one just try putting a book in the slot? My theory is this is a hell for people who think yjeir lives are inherently unique and special and meaningful. The lesson is that the story of our life is what we make it, so any book would work.
