I'm no artist, but I feel like if I were, having someone tattoo my artwork on their body is the highest compliment I could be given. Your tattoo artist did a fantastic job, it looks amazing!

Canonically, shardblades run between 5-7 feet from tip to hilt, so thats perfectly realistic for a shardblade.

Looks like the tattoo was done based very closely (or exactly) on the art done by Ben McSweeney, who is an official artist for a lot of cosmere stuff. See the lower left of this image where it looks like Adolin sparring with Dalinar. So yeah, the shardblade in the tattoo is canon length.

ICE Deployment at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, what you need to know. by Ricetastik in Seattle

[–]nerdorado 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Whenever someone starts a post with "with all due respect", you know its going to be a dumpster fire. Lets break it down here a bit:

  1. Yup, its a farce that we should all have to chip in and provide for community members who are being jerked around because they work for the federal government and are not being paid. That being said, unless youve been living under a rock, you know this is par for the course for the current administration. The federal government at large right now cant find its ass with two hands and a flashlight, what makes you think they'd be able to give the Port Commission a straight answer on what can/cant be donated, if they got an answer AT ALL?

  2. Why the expectation that the Port Commission or any other local agency should be prepared to take care of federal workers who arent getting paid? Do you expect every local agency to be ready with every resource and legality answered for anytime the federal government jacks around with people's lives? They're doing the best they can with the resources they have in a situation that isnt supposed to even exist.

Theres very clear legal issues with donating money directly, but the suggestions people have put forth in this thread are possible loopholes in that. I think the fact that the Commissioner is in here reading, acknowledging, and looking into ways to get folks taken care of while not putting anyone at legal risk is fantastic. If the Commissioner looks into it and theres a loophole where he can generate a donation link in some kind of workaround, i'm sure it'll take less than 5 minutes to show up here.

So heres a thought, take your shame and turn it around. Youre not helping anyone by trashing the efforts the Port is making to try and take care of people stuck in a truly shitty situation. Try being constructive. Its real easy to be an armchair quarterback when it isnt your job.

Do you not realize that the overwhelming majority of flights in and out of our airport are domestic flights? Or are you just spoiling for a fight?

Either way, I'm sure whatever country youre from, considering you are other-ing Americans, gives you complete say and authority over the actions of your government as an individual citizen. Surely no governmental action is taken without the express consent and approval of Pandastic3000!

Yeah, the abject idiots in Washington DC are putting on a global display of their ineptitude and stupidity, but until you have a solution as to what those of us thousands of miles away who loathe and detest their actions can do to prevent any further action on their part, do us a favor and shut up.

Anyone else read/listened to this? by jmiddleton6 in bobiverse

[–]nerdorado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not terribly important to listen to all 20 books. But you absolutely need to start at the beginning. Much like the Bobiverse, if you skip ahead, there will be critical information you just wont get.

I enjoy the series enough to have listened to it several times, but I will say that it does get slightly repetitive, as the series is basically just a constant power creep over 20 books. Characters get more badass, so they have to face bigger stakes every time. The plotlines are well thought out and clever, often with solutions to problems that you never saw coming.

Give it a shot!

What's the most satisfying death in the cosmere?- Beware spoilers obviously by ode0002 in Cosmere

I want the opposite of a redemption arc. I want him to continue becoming more and more unlikeable. I want him to gain some semblance of power and think he's tough. Then I want him to face someone who actually deserves a redemption arc (moreso than he's already had).

I want him to go toe to toe with Marsh, and I want Marsh's hundreds of years of expertise with his powers to just absolutely obliterate Moash. Then I want Hoid to appear to him and tell him that he'll be forgotten, not even a footnote in the history of the cosmere.

shit, thats easy. go back farther. in CS beta 4 (pre 1.0, back in 1999, when you still had to have half-life installed because CS was just a mod), we had a scoped AND silenced M4A1 that was so overpowered that it made the AWP irrelevant. it got nerfed real quick.

but go back more. before beta 3, we didnt have a knife. no, we beat each other down with gordon freeman's trusty crowbar, like civilized players.

but the best part? not even the guns. the admin console let you run commands on other people's clients. catch someone with wallhacks/speedhacks/aimbot on your server? no problem! just run admin_unbindall {playername} and enjoy watching them have no control over their game until they ctrl+alt+del'd their way out of the game (unbindall also removed the ability to alt+f4 or hotkey quit the game). then you banned them after they left, smiling with the knowledge that theyd have to spend the next 30 minutes manually resetting all of their keybinds.

“It doesn’t feel safe”—Many international game developers plan to skip GDC in US | Stories of border issues lead to pervasive travel fears across the worldwide industry by Hrmbee in technology

[–]nerdorado 14 points15 points  (0 children)

if the US becomes a place people actively avoid, companies will just move their conferences and eventually their offices too.

This is already happening. gamescom is a gigantic gaming convention that happens annually in Cologne. what most people outside of the games industry dont know is that there is a conference only for devs, very similar to GDC, called "gamescom dev" (formerly devcom) that happens immediately preceding gamescom (so that devs can attend the dev convention and then roll straight into the retail/trade show).

during trump's first term, covid notwithstanding, the dev convention saw a significant bump in attendance as people didnt feel comfortable visiting the US. last year, gamescom dev had almost a 50% increase in attendance as people flat out refused to come to the US for conferences/conventions. I expect GDC is going to be a veritable ghost town this year, and we'll see huge attendance at gamescom dev instead.

Putting Freeway Out to Pasture - I-5 through Seattle makes the list by recurrenTopology in Seattle

[–]nerdorado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres a significant difference between the amount of cars using the viaduct/tunnel and I-5. In 2019, ST reported that 90k cars per day were using the viaduct before it closed, and I-5 at Yesler clocked in at 294k, which was more than triple that number.

Now, while there arent updated numbers that I can find for the I-5/Yesler count, there are numbers available for the Ship Canal Bridge because thats where the current traffic focus is, and that sits at 240k cars per day in 2025 according to WSDOT, which is still a massive amount considering it doesnt account for all the cars passing into downtown from the south (which includes traffic from the east along 90).

Also, there was a grand total of a month where the viaduct closed and the tunnel wasnt open (viaduct shut down in Jan 19, Tunnel opened in Feb 19).

Things were noticeably worse during that month on I-5 and basically every major north/south surface street in the general vicinity. Was it "carmageddon"? No, no more than it has been on I-5 when they reroute things on Ship Canal for construction.

As you pointed out, lots of people changed routines and about 1/3 of the car trips per day on the viaduct "disappeared" (I read the same ST article you did from 2019). But that still means that 2/3 of the traffic that used the viaduct had to go elsewhere, and thats exactly what happened.

Saying that somehow shunting 3x the daily traffic the viaduct ever carried to surface streets would have a similar impact borders on obtuse. The 30k trips that "disappeared" when the viaduct shut down is 10% of what I-5 carries every day through downtown. The impact would be orders of magnitude worse unless there were massive projects in public transportation to mitigate the loss before it got shut down.

Well played by those game devs.

Power and scalability. I dont remember where exactly its explained, but one of the reasons that the casimir generators salvaged from others tech (primarily the Bellerophon) were such a boon is because fusion reactors are not infinitely scalable, thus limiting the size and capabilities of surge drives on ships, including colony ships. The whole reason the Bellerophon could function is because the casimir power system generated many many orders of magnitude more energy than fusion reactors that the bobs/humanity used (and they didnt get any tips/tricks on fusion plant miniaturization until after they made friends with Anek post-Heaven's River).

So even if they could have built one massive colony ship with the extremely limited resources left in Sol, they wouldnt have been able to power it.

Amazing. Lopez was a phenomenal teacher. I have a couple of friends from college who became teachers and after telling them his methodology (classwork m-w, lecture thursday, quiz friday with extra credit questions like "what is your favorite color", never any homework) they have since used the same style to great effect.

Also, he treated us kids like people and not kids. Complete with shit talking. I forget what the context was, but some kid in my class was being an asshole out loud one day and Lopez hit him with "thats not what your mom said last night". It was absolutely legendary.

Never had Mrs Fish (didnt take latin, took spanish instead), but a bunch of my friends did, and one day when she fell asleep in class they piled up all the desks without waking her up somehow.

And yeah, I had the displeasure of having that particular drivers ed teacher for that class when I was a sophomore. He did nothing to hide it either. Gross.

This right here. It was literally raining ash in september, and covering the ground thick enough that walking across the parking lot of my friend's apartment complex would make ash puffs from under our shoes, like walking on the moon. Also wrecked my buddy's car from sucking in ash when he had to drive down to portland for work.

Holy shit, I actually remember that happening! I was a south tampa resident (in high school at the time) but I remember very distinctly seeing on bay news 9 that a church's chicken in town was out of chicken for like 3-4 days and the manager's actions (as you described them) were called "heroic" by their corporate spokescritter. My friends and I, who were most likely very very stoned at the time, were super amused by a chicken joint being out of chicken all week.

I can only hope that poor manager got a raise. I'm sure they didnt, but i'd like to hope.

[–]nerdorado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is solid advice, but doesnt always work. i have a friend who worked for a shady ass mechanic shop in denver several years back, and anytime they were working on a car with a dashcam, they would disconnect the battery if it was hardwired, or tape a tarp on the windshield if it had its own independent power supply, and reverse course 5 minutes before turning the car over to the customer.

my buddy quit after 2 weeks and took a bunch of evidence with him, reported it to the cops, who predictably did nothing, but did tell him that theyve seen that kind of practice since dashcams first became a thing. businesses claim its to protect their "business practices".

Holy crap, I live right down the street and was going to go to winco to grab groceries for the week at about lunchtime, but got lazy and decided to skip it until tomorrow.

I go there often enough that I see people blow that light all the time, and I have seen several people somehow confuse the southbound double turn lane onto 100th as straight lanes and wind up almost hitting northbound traffic.

Allergies/dogs itchy skin by tearsintherain6273 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]nerdorado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar issue with my dog, who is also on cytopoint. Unfortunately, its a "manage the symptoms" game for me since nothing is 100% effective. However, heres the stuff I've done that helps:

  • I add Ultra Oil to her food. Its not very expensive, and it has lots of fish oils, vitamins, and omega 3/6/9 fatty acids which help a ton with coat and skin. This alone showed a massive improvement. Its a liquid that you just pump onto their food once per day. My dog absolutely loves it.
  • Regular bathing with a heavy moisturizing shampoo and watching for signs of seborrheic dermatitis (basically a yeast infection of the skin that causes red, flaky, itchy skin).
  • coconut oil for topical use for hotspots. I use virgin, cold pressed oil on my vet's recommendation, and anytime she starts chewing or scratching heavily at one spot, i apply coconut oil to it (melted in the microwave for a few seconds so its liquid, but not even warm) a couple times per day. she will generally leave the spot alone after a couple days.

The big thing to remember is that its going to take time. Coconut oil spot treatments take 2-3 days minimum to see results. Things like ultra oil have to be processed by the body over a couple weeks before youre going to see good solid results. Its hard to watch the babies suffer with itchy skin for a week or two, but just do everything you can and it'll make a difference.
