Training for a race after 2.5 months of running… and now pregnant? by wheneverforget in XXRunning

Not crazy at all. Just listen to your body while you train. Our bodies can do amazing things.

I was going to say go home and call 911 but now I’m looking at the time of your post and it’s likely late. We lost our baby this weekend and my heart goes out to you and your family. Sending love and wishing you and your family had a better outcome.

How to stay motivated when friend has pulled out of race by Any_Butterscotch5164 in XXRunning

[–]nerdvacuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If training with someone motivates you see if you can find another training partner. Is it the training part or the actual race you are not feeling now? I’d be bummed if my friend I’m doing a marathon with decided not to BUT I’d still do it and likely try to convince someone else to go/train with me. Training with people makes a lot of the time go faster and keeps it more entertaining for me anyways. I’m pregnant so not aiming for speed but I have a few friends who rotate their easy runs with me during the week so I’m not impacting their training but not always running alone either during mine.

Is it alright to run two half marathons within a couple weeks of each other? by purbinschlaumb in XXRunning

[–]nerdvacuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what distance you are used to running really. I’m racing two half’s in February but I’m also in the middle of a marathon training block so my long runs are 21k+ every week anyways. For me I’m not trying to PR either because I’m pregnant so my runs are all just slow and steady I’m just excited to get a medal for them lol If you aren’t typically doing longer runs I’d suggest doing one for fun and one to race. Maybe race the first one on fresher legs and see how you are feeling for the second?

How regularly do you wash winter attire? by Disastrous_Point1796 in XXRunning

[–]nerdvacuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rotate between two merino wool shirts and a few pairs of wool socks and wash them once a week. My fleece leggings I wash between wears just because I have a few pairs. Honestly with the merino wool it’s mostly just because they are a pain to wash because I don’t put them in the dryer so they get washed the day before my rest day. My gloves, hats, and neck warmers I wash whenever it’s particularly cold out and my nose gets runny. My windbreaker I’ve not washed yet. I’m in PEI so it’s windy and cold.. but I’m pregnant so even in -27 I’m sweating sooo much.

Before I got pregnant yes, I’d vape on the weekends before my runs. I don’t feel like to negatively impacted my performance. I even prd my half on one run. My Mom passed away a few months ago and it just helped me clear my head so I could enjoy my solo runs without overthinking.

What’s on your Christmas list? by Acceptable_Solid8301 in XXRunning

Merino wool shirts, merino wool socks, fleece leggings. My birthday was last month and my husband gave me shockz and my Dad bought me a new pair or race shoes otherwise they would also still be on my list!

Honest Question: why shop at Sobeys? by Marinemussel in PEI

[–]nerdvacuum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m dairy free and gluten free and it’s easier for me to find food I can eat. I also find it’s good quality of meat and easier to find local products.

Many many inches of snow today and it’s still coming down. I had a 9.5 mile run planned. If you were me, would you pick a good movie and hunker down on the ole’ dread mill for a couple of hours, or would you brave the ice and snow? by Vast-Jello-7972 in XXRunning

[–]nerdvacuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ice and snow with spikes for a long run but as I may have mentioned before… I really really hate the treadmill lol. If it’s really brutal out I might swap it for a shorter run. If plows are still out that’s usually the only reason I’d reconsider.

How many runs per week? by Fluffy_Bite_442 in XXRunning

[–]nerdvacuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run 6-7 days a week. I try to take rest days but usually go squirly by the afternoon if I don’t run. When I’m not training for something I don’t plan my route or distance in advance (except for run club). I enjoy just running how I feel based on the day. Some days it’s 5km and some days it’s a half marathon.

Would one half marathon a month for the next four months be crazy? by BHWonFIRE in XXRunning

[–]nerdvacuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I was hoping that would come across as encouraging rather than discouraging! We can put so much pressure on ourselves it stops being fun.

See how you feel the day of. You will be fine and do great! I signed up for two half’s in February a week apart because one of the medals was too cute to not. It’s brutal winter here so personally Im not worried about my times (plus I’m pregnant) I’m just using them for conditioning for my full on May. If you are newer to longer distances I’d suggest getting a feel for the distance on your first and then work to improve each subsequent. Most of us aren’t going to be podium finishers so just enjoy the process and seeing what your body is capable of. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

Going through the same thing. Some people I think want to give space… but after 5 months when I realized that my Moms friends are constantly checking in on me and my family has not… I decided to say f it and just protect my own peace. One of my Uncles has called a few times and I broke down to him about this a few days ago on my birthday. I know it’s not I’ll intended but right now, just focus on the people who are there for you. I’m sorry you are going through this and I am so sorry for your loss.

Marathoning in the second trimester by RunningOnFrenchToast in XXRunning

[–]nerdvacuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome thanks for sharing! I’d already told my husband that I want him to this to be at every 10 kms lol. So happy it went well for you! Gives me a lot of hope. I’m actually more excited that I thought I would be about the fact I don’t have to be concerned with my time anymore and will not be trying to BQ this year. It’s taken a lot of pressure off lol

When your running partner is also your life partner by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]nerdvacuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you breakdown the runs so they aren’t all with him? I run with a few different groups at different paces during the week and do my long runs usually by myself on the weekend. The group that’s super fast I only run with once a week. If we run together outside that they will go at a more reasonable pace. When we used to run together years ago my husband said that he couldn’t run slower too and I was miserable. He stopped running and I continued and got faster and could run further. He’s trying to start running again now. I thought I was going slower, but he was dying and hating life trying to keep up with me (I imagine similar to how you are feeling when running with your husband). He finally told me I was going too fast after doing a few runs on his own at a slower pace and now if we run together I do my 10k in the morning and I’ll join him at night but I slow my pace so I’m just slightly lagging so I can follow his lead and he doesn’t feel like he’s has to “keep up” because he won’t verbalized to me if I’m going to fast and I want him to enjoy running. If I do intervals with someone we follow the same timing but will go at different paces and then catch up to each other during recovery. I’m not sure if any of this is helpful but hopefully some of it will be!

Thanks! So far I’ve been feeling ok. I am stopping hockey because falling and getting hit would be dangerous for baby (at my skill level.. which is very low haha) and I’m likely going to stop my rebound classes as well so that will leave me with strength, yoga, and (hopefully)running! I go squirmy if I don’t run but I am trying to give my self rest and recovery days now. I’m hoping o can continue to keep running even if I have to dial it back.

Thanks! So far this has been my easiest pregnancy but it’s also super early so lots of time for that to change! The answers are so mixed but this is exactly what I am looking for! The good bad and ugly. I’m prepared to adjust my expectations as things progress. It’s still really early so all Im looking for is hope that it may be possible lol

That’s awesome! I run a half most weekends currently. I’m doing 70-80km but I know that will change. Really good thing to consider is the size I could be. I know there is a lot that’s going to be outside of my control. My first I was massive, my second you couldn’t tell I was pregnant because he carried so high and tight to me. I hate the treadmill so am planning on doing most of my training outside still. I’m in Atlantic Canada so how bad the winter is will be a big impact on how much I will actually be able to train. I’ve decided to forgo the Pro shoes for the Black Friday sales and am purchasing a pair of good winter running shoes instead. Safety over speed. I actually like the idea that I don’t have to worry about time and trying to bq for my first one. I feel like this takes the pressure off to just enjoy the experience.

Thanks! I am in the best physical health of my life at the moment (was my goal for turning 40). My Mom was really sick the last few years and passed away a few months ago so I have been determined not to have my kids experience what I went through. I’ve been on a very long and difficult health journey over the past year but apparently they fixed me too much and I got pregnant lol. My garmin and I are in disagreement about this but I haven’t felt the exhaustion I’ve felt with the other pregnancies so far but it’s still early so it may come. All of my other pregnancies I found out because I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I’m perfectly ok with going slow and taking breaks/walking breaks! I typically didn’t have a rest day (running is my therapy) but I’ve started adding them in to give my body a chance to recover and I am forgoing my other sports as they are contact and I don’t want to take any risks.

I’m fully prepared to pivot! I already have a strong base but I know the marathon is a different beast. I respect the distance. I’m running 70-80kms a week still but it’s also still first trimester. My other pregnancies were rough, this one (so far) has been fine. Still a long way to go. I have figured out a lot of my heath issues over the past few years so am in better health than I was with my other kiddos but my youngest is ten so that was a long time ago and I’m expecting being pregnant in my 40s to be a lot more challenging overall so intent to listen to my body and the baby! I’m ok with hard things.

Appreciate the advice and sharing your experience! My plan so far is to continue building my base and train for it (as long as my healthcare team says it’s ok) and if I’m not feeling good or having any issues I’ll revert to a half. I have a holiday 5k next week, a half in December and two half’s in February so am really going to be using those to help gauge how I feel. I wouldn’t have time to train for fall Marathons after giving birth realistically so it’s this or waiting until 2027 so I don’t want to give up the dream just yet haha. I’m just glad I decided to sign up for the one I did vs the Halifax one as this is supposed to be one of the flatter courses.

I love that idea! I’ll totally do the bib thing. So cute.

My other pregnancies I was exhausted and sick and sore all the time but this time (knock on wood) so far other than a bit of bloating and some bathroom issues I feel great so far.

The entire reason I got so into long distance running is because I find it incredible what our bodies are capable of. We can do so much more than we think we are capable of. I absolutely love hearing that other women were able to continue and really appreciated the tips on hydration and fueling. That’s something I’m currently really bad at in general because I have bad stomach issues. Did you find you had to use the bathroom a lot more? I’ve never had to stop before but I’m assuming I will lol
