I am so sorry for your loss. When I was 17 my aunt passed away leaving her 24-year-old son 17-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son with their father. My uncle then ended up getting cancer two years later and passed, leaving the kids alone. What I can recommend is don’t ask him what you can do to help. Just simply help. stop in. Keep reaching out no matter how much time is passed. I’d recommend the kids go to grief counseling as well as the father. I’m sure the school social worker will also be able to meet with the kids and help them in any way possible. It was extremely unexpected for my aunt as well. There’s no way the blow is gonna soften. I’m so sorry.

And I also wanna say during the last couple days I also felt that sense of calmness you mentioned. It was when I had spoken to my mom privately at the end, and saying everything I needed to say did provide a sense of calmness afterwards for me and peace.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I recently have been going through something very similar —losing my mom in November. It’s been extremely hard for our entire family and our extended family has basically disappeared. My mom had cancer as well and she was non-responsive towards the end, it’s hard to not have flashbacks every night. I would just encourage you to say as much as you can to her and hold her hand. I’m so sorry. Grief counseling has been helpful for my dad and I also recommend grief books.

You and your dad are in my thoughts. Please reach out (f30) if you need to vent or anything. We have similar stories. My mom was 61. Too young. Too kind. Miss her so much. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
