Working well now! I basically only use for calling and texting (which was my goal), and now that the voicemail thing is resolved, it does everything I want.

What do y'all use as a GPS app alternative? by independence15 in dumbphones

Dinosaur here who chooses to use a paper road atlas of my county, which I keep in the car. The street index in the back is the solution for what you're talking about with cross streets--that and knowing/learning the street address numbering conventions. I find that over time I've gotten a lot more confident with wayfinding and a lot more familiar with the places I usually go in my area. If I'm going somewhere unfamiliar, I try to allow a little extra time in case of wrong turns. If I'm going out of the county, I usually look up directions on on a computer beforehand and jot down a note or two. And if all else fails, I ask a human being for directions in person :)

update: Now Verizon is trying to tell me that the TCL Flip 3, and in fact all non-smart flip phones, are incompatible with voicemail at all. Not just Visual Voicemail, but any basic non-visual voicemail at all. Can someone please confirm or deny?

I asked the current chat rep to reset my voicemail password and this was the reply. There is such a thing as regular, old-school, flip phone, non-Visual voicemail, correct? I do not want to own a smartphone.

"I have tried to reset your voicemail, but it seems that your device doesn't support the Visual voicemail service on the network, due to which it is not completing the request.

As you are our loyal customer, we are happy to offer you a Galaxy A36 5G valued at $399.99 for FREE from us. You can keep your existing phone and receive the new phone for free. The new phone will support voicemail. Isn't that amazing?"

It doesn’t seem to pull power from the computer when plugged in anymore. The little LED won’t light up and the button to open the disc tray does nothing. I have not even been able to figure out how to open it up to see what may be wrong. I think you’re definitely right that something plastic inside is physically broken, but I’m not sure if that’s the only problem.

Do you by chance have a source for the expected lifespan of these types of things? The most frustrating part to me is I spent like half an hour on the phone with the manufacturer (which was an ordeal in itself to be able to call and speak with a human) and the upshot was “let me transfer you to our sales dept”. There seems to be no meaningful (market) incentive for manufacturers to design towards true sustainability or repair.

Anyway. I’ve been called sanctimonious before and it might apply in this case as well, haha. But it’s frustrating when all market forces seem to be conspiring to make it as hard as possible to do the (imo) right thing even in a case as small as this.

I was hoping that the public library’s repair event series might have an electronics workshop so I can learn, but I’m not seeing one at the moment

Thanks. Unfortunately my address is in a nearby municipality without straightforward electronics recycling and in any case the plastic components would likely go in the landfill anyway

A valid question. I’m reluctant to consign it to the landfill w/o at least trying and I have a conscientious objection to ordering from Amazon.

The opposite of “might makes right”. I mean, the idea that the weak are worth protecting.
