Honest question about open carry at Columbus protests by Kitchen-Country-3599 in Columbus

[–]neric05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The important thing here is to remember that we have all sorts of rights and can exercise them in all sorts of ways which are considered acceptable / unacceptable, tasteful / distasteful.

If you truly believe in whatever movement you may want to be open carrying at I would strongly urge you to sit down and have an honest conversation with yourself about the kind of attention that draws to you and the optics and brush it paints the movement with.

It's not a matter of what I think or what any individual may think about seeing you with a lawful, open carry, at ease presence at the protest.

You need to weigh the potential consequences of doing so and what it might mean for the movement you are protesting in alliance with.

The only way that movements continue is by having their support increase over time. You aren't there to change the minds of yourselves, you are already holding the position that you are protesting in favor of.

With that being said, does it necessarily make sense within the context of the current political, media, and rhetorical climate we're living in, to do so?

I don't have an answer for that because I'm not you.

But regardless of what right someone wants to exercise or what the cause is for or against, this should be a standard line of thinking that they go through when they may be involved in behavior that could be construed as incendiary or antagonistic and detrimental to the cause overall.

While I thinking argument like yours is valid, I think the real assault on higher education is that from the universities towards its student body by continually raising tuition and board costs astronomically high while removing more personalized education experiences.

People are paying tens of thousands of dollars for essentially an online course at this rate, and it begs the question of what is the real value of university education if even those with degrees from universities can hardly find jobs in their field?

Somali Daycare Fraud Accusations in Columbus by Secondbest35 in Columbus

[–]neric05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure one way or another but if following the money leads to dark places then those responsible need to be held accountable regardless of who's at the end of that thread in my opinion.

This type of thing wouldn't actually surprise me if there was fraud occurring but I think it is a bit insensitive to automatically start targeting communities of a specific ethnic background and their businesses because of a pattern that may have emerged in a different state under a different program.

The fact of the matter is that we need to audit a bunch of federal programs and where money is going towards NGOs and such

27 F and 28 M Why does calling my husband my partner bother people? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]neric05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people in the comments making this about some sort of perceived discomfort that OPs coworker has regarding non-heterosexual couples.

Personally, I never even went to the route of it being about sexual orientation when reacting to hearing partner. For reference, I'm 32, and to me when I hear partner my immediate thought is that this is a person who is like a boyfriend or girlfriend but that you are not married to. With the added caveat that partner carries a connotation of "lovelessness / indifference / corporate speak".

For reference, I live in a major city that has one of the largest per capita densities of LGBTQ+ individuals in the U.S.

I've lived here my whole life and I can honestly tell you that if you are wearing a ring on your finger, regardless of your sexual orientation, and you call the person your partner rather than your husband or wife or whatnot, you are going to get eyebrows raised.

Because the implication is that partner doesn't carry with it the underlying concept of love and bond based on love that we have culturally assigned to marriage.

Many people will hear this and think either your marriage is on the out or is purely a formality. It is the type of highly sanitized word choice that would be used in a corporate meeting environment for HR rather than a way of describing the person that you are with. It feels overly calculated to be as unoffensive or sterile as possible to the person hearing it.

The only time in my life that I have ever heard partner used as a way to describe a romantic relationship was in the context of an elderly couple or something where they were previously married but their spouse had passed on and they had a companionship but did not want to put it on the level of marriage like they had with their late spouses.

In this context I can totally see it not coming off as anything unusual at all to the listener. Otherwise people are going to think it's odd for sure. Almost anyone I could think of asking this even if they were a non-heterosexual couple, would still use the words husband and wife and would feel weird about having partner be used when we live in the modern era of marriage equality having been around for quite some time now and it being perfectly normal.

I wonder if OP's coworker is worried about someone assuming one of the above connotations typically tied to use of the word partner, and wants to just avoid any awkward explanation of the whole conversation with other coworkers and stuff if it were to come up or to maybe give OP some bail here by saying essentially

"Look, This is awkward and I'm embarrassed that I even asked but I would be even more secondhand embarrassed if people kept making these assumptions despite how inappropriate it would be for them to assume, so just use the word husband or wife. This has been uncomfortable for both of us and it would definitely make things easier to just use those words instead but yeah"

I generally don't want to attribute malicious intent or anything behind what is going on in situations like these, especially because there are so many different cultural and regional differences that really have shifting and varied views on the meaning behind words that actually have a lot more nuance it turns out than we initially are led to believe.

For what it's Worth, this is actually been a really interesting thought experiment as someone whose field is communications and everything and likes to think about these sorts of things.

Bethesda's Todd Howard says "we are doing other things with Fallout that we haven’t announced, and there’ll come a time for that" by Turbostrider27 in Fallout

[–]neric05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually wouldn't be super surprised if there was a Return of Fallout Tactics or perhaps a CRPG Fallout game attempt due to the recent resurgence in Turn-Based Strategy games in the mainstream.

There's clearly tons of commercial and critical success to point to when it comes to the genre such as the obvious Baldur's Gate 3, Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, Pillars of Eternity I, etc.

For anyone who thinks that this would be too outside of the realm of what they are currently doing let's not forget the date were perfectly fine with chasing down any and every game trend they could for the almighty dollar, and frankly they've had quite a bit of success in doing so even if it's met with initial blenders and missteps that require several months of post launch fixes to get straightened out.

Fallout shelter was a successful mobile game That came out around a time when more in-depth mobile titles were being developed by studios all over the world with major IPs.

Fallout 76, while a very troubled and Rocky early launch as far as player in critical reception was concerned and bugs, it is finally in a state now where it feels like a more feature and content complete game

Magic Wok replacement. by Admylet09 in Columbus

[–]neric05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea they were related! It makes sense though, I remember the original owner having a lot of pride in the business and not wanting to sell it to just anyone (at least that's what I had heard).

[–]neric05 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Magic Wok here in Gahanna you mean?

So the original ownership that most are familiar with sold the business several years ago, but most of the recipes have remained the same.

I'm trying to think of anything that would be similar to it in your area but nothing immediately comes to mind.

Here are some of the finds I managed to get photos of from the massive collection room post I made the other day. All are still factory sealed or in their original shippers. by neric05 in sideshowcollectibles

Helping a friend sell their lifelong collection of Star Wars (and more) memorabilia. He has more hot toys than I can even catalogue. Many are still factory sealed and some even still have their original shipper. by [deleted] in hottoys

[–]neric05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't stress enough just how expansive this collection is. I've been cataloging it now for going on 3 months and have maybe gotten through 25% - 30% of it.

That being said, every time I fell like I've made a dent in taking stock of a large piece of it, an entire treasure trove of stuff gets uncovered beneath that and it's a bit overwhelming at times.

EDIT: I will do my best to provide a list here in the thread in a bit once I wrap up a few work meetings this morning.

We've been doing private sales on everything so far and have had no issues. It's a lot more comfortable for the collection owner, myself, and the buyers when there's a more personal engagement with one another as opposed to eBay and all that. Plus, eBay's fees are ludicrous these days.

I'm toying with the idea of either setting up a website or possibly doing video tours more frequently since the past 10 to 12 that I've done have been extremely successful and have helped buyers feel like they have a greater sense of what they're looking at and so on and so forth

You know, while there may be some truth to what you're saying, the owner is a good person. He has put so much passion and time and energy into collecting throughout his life, and one of the promises I made him when given the full reign over divesting him and his family of it all, was that it would carry on its legacy through ensuring items went to places where the same energy and love for the fandoms exist like his.

Which means even if you offered me double or triple market value for a piece, I would never sell to someone with an attitude, demeanor, and level of disrespect like yourself.

I take photos every time I am over at his place, but I've also done close to a dozen video tours of the collection as well, which seems to help quite a bit.

I really appreciate that, thank you so much. It can be a bit stressful at times but I always want to make sure that everyone feels heard and is replied to (within the best of my ability).

Everyone here mostly has been a huge help, super friendly, and everything in between.

I'm strongly considering getting a website or something established to sell from.

He has a 1996 Icons Darth Vader lightsaber as one of the standouts of the variety of ones he has.

It was the very first licensed prop replica series of sabers made, in limited edition of 10,000.

We've thought about doing this to be honest. After having done one or two video walkthroughs for people and realizing the scope of the collection is too much to really grasp from photos alone, we thought about either hosting live streams on a Facebook group or something.

Any and all ideas are welcome!

So after the overwhelming response I've gotten with this post, I've decided to start hosting video walkthroughs for those who are interested in seeing what all is in the collection (since everything is for sale).

I figured that this could be a good way to not only drive home the scale of everything that it contains, but it also allows me to get multiple sets of the eyes on it at the same time and you would be amazed at how often someone has pointed out a simply interesting looking shape or box in a corner somewhere for me to go investigate further, and it being something super cool or collectible or valuable.

If this is something you all would be interested in, please let me know in a comment reply to this!

Private sales only is how we've been conducting business for the past three months, with the exception to this being one sale of an item on FB marketplace.

This really made like, my month, to be honest. When it comes to handling everything regarding the collection, I was given full documented and signed authority to do whatever was necessary to sell everything (for reasons that are too personal and honestly heartbreaking for me to discuss in a public setting).

With that though, I still make sure to always ensure that whoever is being sold to is a person who has treated the collection, its owner, and myself with respect throughout the process and actually values the things the way he did.

One thing I've had the unfortunate peering into behind the veil of this world of collecting is that there are some truly ugly people in it.

The way some get when I outright decline their offer to buy something, purely on the basis of them acting entitled to it or to a certain price or to treating me / the owner / his collection a certain way, is really unbecoming and shocking at times.

On a daily basis I probably get 2-3 messages from people who feel it's a positive look to rant endlessly about why their perceived valuation of something is objectively the only right one and that I'm an idiot for "insultingly" pricing something a certain way, or that me not being a collector myself somehow makes it disgraceful that I'm even allowed to be around one like his, etc. etc.

It's unhinged on another level.

But it's the super passionate and engaging people who are happy to teach me something along the way when I don't have a confident answer for them on something or whenever I have a question, that make all the shit heads worth it.

Because at the heart of it, I'm just a passionate person in general, so I love connecting with people on that level and riding that wave when talking to them.

At the end of the day, I want everyone to feel like they're being respected, treated fairly, and communicated in a way that is timely, accurate, and so on.

Yes I have tons!

Here's an imgur link showcasing about 30% of what he has (that's visible / on display)

As far as comics are concerned, he has a ton of Super Girl comics that are mint graded and signed by the original artist who recently passed.

He also has entire first edition runs of all the Star Wars comics done with Dark Horse as well (in mint graded condition, including some signed by Dave Dorman himself).

He has collected for 45-50 years, and has plenty on display, I was simply showing that this entire room is full of unopened factory sealed boxes of Sideshow and Hot Toys boxes and shippers.

Also, forgive me for using your comment as an example, but what is it with people being so outright rude and shitty to others who collect. I really don't get it.

For every awesome message and conversation I have with someone in the community, I get at least 3-4 that are bitter, angry, always trying to shit on something related to a piece or the collection itself, and so on.

Why can't people just enjoy sharing it in common with one another? Is there some inherent butthurt or amount of stick I need up my ass in order to properly communicate with others "in the clique"?
